**Q: How does compression work if one side is mesh and allows air back into the cube after zipping?**
A: The compression feature on these don't work like vacuum bags- they compress by using the compression zipper on the side which bring the top and bottom of the cube together.  This reduces the depth of the bag by half.  
Some articles of clothing work really great in a compression packing cube- like a puffy jacket, t shirts, etc.   Some items, like jeans for instance, really don't work at all as they are very dense and difficult to compress any more.
