Good to have and peek around.
It's good and useful on rotation, but it won't answer to your immediate doubts. It's a very good compendium of surgical information, the care and cautions needed with surgical patients; it's particularly good explaining the why's and the how's of the pre/postop medication.I used it mainly when the service was calm and when i had the time to check on the patients's whole story from the beggining, therapies and surgical care all the way.For a student who wants to have an idea of how to manage a surgical patient, it's a good catch. NOt exactly essential to have around but let's face it, there aren't many surgical compendiums out there (that I know of). Comparing it to Operative Surgery (also from Oxford), this is more adjusted to the student and to the understanding, comprehension, behaviour in the OR, types of surgical knots (you can practice it) etc. Operative Surgery focuses more on the surgical procedure - ie, how to make an histerectomy, the material used, and how the whole thing is done - so it fits the general surgeon that is starting than the regular med student. At least, that's how I see it.Hope it's useful!I would recommend it to those who want a surgical-like compendium around. It's simple and easy.

Concise and very reader friendly
I bought this for my foundation training rotations in Surgery and orthopaedics, mostly to get an overview of general surgery and surgical specialities; I must say that I love this book. It is not only concise and succinct; it is very reader friendly. It has been updated to take into account evidence based practice. The revision includes new information on the assessment and preparation of the patient, anaesthesia, critical care, the key components of general surgery and surgical specialities. Because it is so reader friendly( by this I mean that it is not cluttered or busy(like OHCS/OHCM) each topic is on one page or two pages with marginal space for notes and easy on the eyes) it is enjoyable to read and makes the ideal book to have in your pocket or handbag. It is also great for quick reference when on call. It has web links and includes surgically relevant anatomy and physiology. It is not as colourful as OHCM, but written with two colours -blue and black. It is a pleasure to read this book, and worth the upgrade if you have an older edition. I strongly recommend it to all junior doctors and medical students.
