Fun
got this to start messing around with. Fun little hobby to have in the warmer months. Not at all very good at it but part of the fun is learning and just creating your own little things. The tools are a good quality from what I can tell. Thick and sharp tools. Nice case to keep them in. All around great in my opinion. I would think this is perfect for beginners. If you're a pro then I'd imagine you know the better quality kits. But for starting out, this is such a nice kit.

First timmer at wood carving.
I like this set. I made a spoon with the first piece of wood. It took me two camping trips. Relaxing to me. Husband used them and broke the tip off two if the blades and a knick out of one. I am glad they include the gloves. I use one when whittling. The blade are sharp. This would be a good gift.

Excellent starter kit for future wood carvers
ReviewsByMuseI wanted to try out a wood carving set so saw this and pounced on it. I wasn't disappointed. Being a completed newbie beginner at wood carving, the tools are easy to handle. The inclusion of the safety gloves is a BIG PLUS. Wear them!! The knives are quite sharp and easily cut through the included wood blocks (basswood) for training. You'll want to search out some training videos online to get some tips, as the instructions are just about telling you what the tools are and what type of things you can do. There is no instruction / training on actually HOW to carve. There is a ton of training videos online though! This would be a great gift for a teenager or young adult interested in getting into wood carving without spending a lot of money on professional tools. A good first step into the hobby. I'm glad I got it.PROS:- Includes three different types of carving knives (whittling, hook, detail)- Includes cut-resistant gloves- Includes starter blocks of basswood for carving- Includes nice carrying case- Includes polishing compound and sharping strop (yes strop)CONS:- Handles are a little larger grip, seem to be a bit chonkyQUALITY RATING:4.8 stars - nice tools for a beginner (not a pro set)SAFETY RATING:** THESE ARE KNIVES BE CAREFUL!! **ReviewsByMuse

A great beginner's kit
Something I've always wanted to learn was wood carving, but never knew how or where to start. I like to keep a basket of crafts around for when I'm feeling in the mood for something new, or when being stuck in bed has me wanting a distraction. This was a perfect fit for that basket! The tools seem sturdy and not at all flimsy. The wood doesn't strike me as low-quality scraps just thrown off for practicing novices. It's a nice kit with everything you need to get started, and there are also plenty of videos on the Internet to give you more instruction as you go along. These tools should last a while, until you decide that the day has come to upgrade because you've fallen in love with the craft. I'm happy with this kit and have been having a good time familiarizing myself with the tools and reading about techniques.Great hobby starter for slightly older kids and above - anyone who can handle a sharp edge and wants to learn. I am impressed with this kit.

Good to see if you like wood carving, but has some limitations
This is a very interesting little wood carving kit. The wood blocks are all solid and consistent, the tools are decent quality, and the gloves fit snug and should work well (I don’t want to test how cut resistant they are). There are a few concerns I have though - just keep these in mind if you are considering this kit:1. The ‘instructions’ essentially say to put on the gloves and carve away. You get one single picture of how to use each of the three tools, and how to use the sharpener. There are no patterns, carving ideas, or even something basic like “always carve away from you vs. toward you” - if you are really a beginner, this kit is really missing some basic instructions.2. The gloves are slippery with the tools. They don’t feel slippery by themselves, and they grip the wood blocks just fine, but it’s almost impossible to hold the knife with the gloves. The sample pictures form the kit show the person wearing both gloves - but I don’t see how it is possible to grip the knife with the glove - I think you’re going to wind up wearing a glove to hold the wood block and NOT wearing a glove to grip the tool.3. The blocks are fairly small. If you are planning on carving a spoon, think baby spoon, not adult spoon. There are several different block sizes, but none are larger than a few square inches. The problem with carving small blocks of wood is that they are harder to grip - it would be safer for a beginner to include a few bigger pieces of wood to start with. So, yeah - it’s a great idea for a kit, and the execution isn’t bad, but there ARE some limitations to keep in mind.

Great gift idea for someone who wants to experiment with wood carving
This is a nice set. It has 3 different knives and a sharpening block as well as 11 pieces of wood in 3 different sizes to carve. The set comes with cut-resistant gloves and a nice wrap up case. Each of the knives also comes with a protective sheath. The top of the case folds down over the tips of the knives before you roll it up. This keeps the knives in place and protects the points. Make sure to use the sheaths as well or they will cut through the wrap. The wrap case has 2 elastic ties. They can be tied in a knot, or wrapped around the roll and tucked to keep everything held secure without having to undo a knot. This is a great gift idea for someone who wants to experiment with wood carving.
