Tips and tricks books
For people that struggle with emotional eating, it's quiet helpful, she gives you some exercises to do aswell and they actually works if you really give them a go.Most important at least for me, I felt understood for once even if I had different background and experiences in life.I actually suggest to read it.

Good starting book for binge eaters
Overall, I felt the book was worth reading but, in my opinion, there are some negative points. Firstly, I felt it could of been writen more to the point as sometimes I found the writer to waffle on. Secondly, the book made me feel quite isulated as it clearly only addresses women. This made me frustrated on times as binge eating is very prevalent in men.I'm only 21 years old but have suffered greatly from binge eating (although you would never believe it if you met me). Although this book seemed to be centered on issues about "women's" dress size, I personally benefited from some of the hypotheses presented.Aside form the negative points, I feel this book is definitely worth a read for ANYONE with binge eating issues, as it will benefit your perception towards food and provide simple tips to help you break free from the vicious binge cycle.N.B Binge eating is intrinsically linked to OCD. Therefore it's beneficial to read further books specifically on OCD and it's treatment

Doesn't solve the problem, just advocates a different way of being controlled by food.
On account of all the positive reviews I had high expectations of this book. Sadly I was disappointed.Ms Roth does have good insight into the psychology of a compulsive eater, however her method of resolving the problem leaves a lot to be desired.Firstly all food is permissible. Making food off limits is discouraged because it sets up a craving for that food. So far so sensible - after all, all foods are fine in moderation. However moderation is not encouraged. Instead you keep eating your craved foods until the craving burns itself out. Ms Roth ate raw cookie dough for three meals a day for a whole month before she got fed up of it! This advice is not good for anyone's health and particularly bad for those suffering complications of obesity such as Diabetes or Hypercholesaemia. I am pre-diabetic with high cholesterol and am somewhat reluctant to abuse my body with high fat/sugar foods for a prolonged period just because a craving has hit me.Once you have burned out your cravings you are supposed to feel liberated and start to desire a wider range of healthier foods. During this period it is very important that you eat exactly what you fancy. This means you must shop by the day. You must also eat at exactly the times you feel like it...At this point I stopped reading. This is great advice if you are single, childless and work from home. Then you can eat what you please, shop by the day and choose the times at which you eat. I am married with 2 children. I have to consider the food preferences of 3 other people and plan our meals the day before. I cannot afford to eat steak every day, as I would desire. Neither can I sit down and tuck into a plate of food at the time of my choice as I am busy chasing around after children. In conclusion this is an unhealthy and impracticable way of releasing yourself from food craving. I'm also not convinced that everyone who tries it will be able to burn out their food cravings. I recommend Gillian Riley's book - she takes into account all of life's practicalities and shows you a way of being released from overeating whilst having genuine mastery over your cravings for food.

Thank you, briliant
The book is aimed at EMOTIONAL EATING and this is when your eating gets beyond your control. Food is used as comfort, security, to relieve boredom, as self-harm, etc. This book was very helpful for me, it was recommended to me by a psychologist. It helps you understand that the way you look does not define you as a person. From using this book I found that I was able to tackle the route of the problem and as a result I am becoming healthier. I am beginning to become more relaxed about food, which is wonderful after 20 years of struggle. This book has guided me on GAINING CONTROL of my eating. I would highly recommend this book for those who find that they are emotional eating. This is NOT a diet book.

Throw out your diet books and have this one instead!
I bought this book on the recommendations of the previous reviewers and weren't those people right! It is a very honest but funny account of 'emotional eating' that you cannot help but relate to, if you struggle with this - but the most important thing is how much sense it makes - no ambitious ideas, just straight forward 'back to basics' that simply require you to dig a little deeper inside yourself, not your purse for changes. I think there is a lesson in this book for all of us, regardless of our size, to be a bit kinder and more forgiving to ourselves. Buy this - you will not be sorry!

Wonderfully comforting
This is a beautifully written easy-to-read book about a very painful subject. It is, however, the most honest book on this subject that I have ever read. Geneen Roth really knows what it is like to be fat. She has been there and done it and so her advice is entirely from the heart. I am prepared to believe that this works. If you read this book you need never walk to the fridge in a trance again in the middle of the night hoping to fill the hollow inside you. Fantastic.
