Jesus Christ Superstar [DVD]

This is one of the rare films about Jesus that you see Judas perspective, above all I love the music and the bale. Good memories of watch this film with my parents in a very late session in the cinema.

Prompt and professional delivery. Arrived in pristine condition. This is the original 1973 musical version of the classic stage production, which I believe was already a super hit stage play. I saw this in the cinema when I was only nine and ever since, the melodies remained in my mind and play to this day. I really love Ted Neeley's performance. I have a two part adventure featuring Ted in Man from Atlantis and he is just the same lovable person. Evon Elliman sings like a true angel as Mary. Just the setting and the way the coach arrives and the actors putting on their kits and make-up and how they leave the bus in the finale, and gaze up at the cross. Every song is a superhit and the tunes are classical and a real joy to listen to in full volume. I have placed my dvd beside my Holy Bible and will be watching it regularly. I bought this DVD from Amazon after seeing the wonderful revamped (2004) production of JCS at Birmingham Hippodrome recently, because the experience was one I couldn't wait to recreate in my living room.It's interesting to compare this filmed version - which dates back to 2000 - to the new show. It takes a quite different approach, and I find it hard to say which I prefer. I guess I'll just sit on the fence and say I love both - they're wonderful for different reasons.The film has a very modern, edgy, West Side Story-ish feel - with minimalist sets, video screens, graffiti, clubby costumes and Christ fans bearing banners that proclaim slogans like 'JESUS RULES.' It's interesting to see how the new theatre production has returned to its 'Biblical' roots, with more traditional costumes and sets.It's also worth comparing the DVD with the original 1973 Jesus Christ Superstar film. While the feel of that was more epic and grandiose - being shot on stunning location in Israel - this version conversely works well in its studio setting. The ambience is more claustrophobic and menacing.Glenn Carter once again stars as Jesus and looks luscious. He has an amazing vocal range and acts with charismatic passion.The great Rik Mayall gives a gloriously taunting performance in what must be the most fun cameo role in musical theatre - Herod. He plays the sneering king just as he played Richie Rich doing one of his showbiz pastiches in the criminally underrated 80s sitcom Filthy Rich & Catflap.I have to say I find it difficult, after seeing the new show, to imagine anyone but Fame Academy's James Fox playing Judas - he has already made the role so much his own - though Jerome Pradon is excellent here as the tormented traitor. Renee Castle makes a sensual, fiery Mary Magdalene, and Tony Vincent -who has since come to greater prominence in the Queen musical We Will Rock You - makes a pre-Galileo appearance as a blond-highlighted Simon.The DVD features a bonus behind-the-scenes documentary with enlightening interviews with the main stars, crew and Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, and trailers for JCS itself, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat(starring Donny Osmond and Joan Collins) and Cats.As I said, this isn't exactly a new release, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wins new audiences on the back of the recent 'Superstar' tour. Die-hard fans will already have it, but for slow-on-the-uptake converts like me, it's well worth the money.

Way late reviewing this DVD! Blushingtons aside, the 1973 film adaptation of [Sir] Tim Rice (lyricist) and [Lord] Andrew Lloyd Webber's (composer) musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar' is an interesting fascilitation.Released at such a time, there are some then modern inclusions - such as denim flares, a note with the Queen of England's mug shot on it, machine guns, and even planes (or possibly fighter jets). Personally, I prefer a more traditional stylee.Even though the songs are well sung, if you are looking for an alternative version of this musical I would recommend the A New Stage Production version released on DVD in 2000. Apart from the close up camera work, it is very much in keeping with a West End stage production in its style (where it was filmed). Please note that the version I have on DVD is only suitable for Region 2 players.Although, no talented performer as Jesus Christ does as good a job as Steve Balsamo, in my opinion. Please check out his stunning version of a 'Gethsemane (I Only Want To Say)' on YouTube.Yet, in saying all that, a pre-Disco Yvonne Elliman does a cracking performance as Mary Magdalene and has such a lovely voice, there are moments of FABULOSITY in this film ('Could We Start Again, Please' is a stand out, as is 'Superstar'), the fact that this was filled in Israel is impressive, considering..., and the central story is so well written and utterly heartbreaking at times. Excelente! Ya tenía este Dvd pero se daño por uso por lo que empecé a buscar como recuperarlo y aquí lo encontré a un buen precio. Llego rápido y el dvd se ve en perfecto estado, venia sellado asi que todo esta excelente. Ahora sí puedo verla nuevamente!!

脚本、音楽、俳優たち、すべて荒削りのように見えて精緻に計算され尽くしている。また懐かしい７０年代の自由な空気が映像から溢れ出てくるのも感激です。何より製作者たちの「新しいものを創り出そう」という熱意が嬉しいです。それに較べると今時の映画は、不気味なほど綺麗なＣＧと無難な編集でもうウンザリ。金払ってまで観る価値のないものばかりですね〜。２０００年版のキリストはマッチョすぎて興ざめでしたが、７３年版テッド・ニーリーのキリストははまり役です。彼は今年もう６９歳になろうとする老兵ですが、Ted Neeley and The Little Big Bandという自分のバンドを率いて音楽活動も行っており、同じく６０年代に活躍したミック・ジャガーみたいに元気ですね〜。今後はこういう旧作をＨＤリマスターしてブルーレイで出して欲しいです。
