I purchased this chess set for my son who loves playing chess. I wanted to buy him something of good quality that will hopefully stand the test of time. This ticks all the boxes. It’s exceeded my expectations and more. I purchased it in the sale and although to me still a lot of money it is worth every penny. I really like the wobble feature which will certainly add to the fun of the game. The board is beautifully crafted. and the individual chess pieces are weighted and of a contemporary style although still in the recognisable form. Each piece is finished with a metallic base which will help them to last over time. At first I thought I was crazy spending so much on a chess set for a child but now I’ve seen it I’ve got regrets at all. I can honestly say this is probably my most favourite item of anything I have ever purchased from Amazon.

Pieces are heavy and wobble. Looks beautiful. All pieces are bottom heavy with metal on the bottom stuck on with glue. Can break if dropped. Board has a nice unique curve design

The Umbra chess set is without a doubt the most beautiful purchase I have made this year. Not only is it gorgeous to look at, but it feels wonderful to the touch - the board is a constructed of individual pieces perfectly stuck together in an opposite pattern of not just colours, but also grain of the wood, the pieces have a smooth texture and are are weighed so they sit perfectly on the board, remaining in place even when spinning around their own axes. The inherently lovely walnut wood produces the most delightful sound when the pieces touch. All in all, this chess set is not only beautiful, but exquisitely put together. A gift for a lifetime. More like this please, Umbra.

I stumbled across this set by accident and knew I had to have one. It looks every bit as good as I hoped. Clearly high quality and beautifully designed. Each piece is like mini modern sculpture, as is the board with its wavy structure. Looks like a painstaking product to construct. Definitely one to leave on show and a smile inducing conversation piece. My daughter who is not a big chess fan, immediately wanted to have a couple of games and couldn't leave the pieces alone. The pieces look enough like regular Staunton style to not be distracting, although I did manage to confuse my Queen for my bishop in the first game! Not the sort of thing to be moved on a regular basis, as it is quite heavy. Once everything starts wobbling it becomes a bit of a cabaret. It's like carrying a shallow tray full of water. The box and foam insert is very nice too, although because mine was a discounted Amazon Warehouse purchase, it was in less than perfect condition. Only negative is that you'd don't get an additional pair of Queens for pawn promotion. At this price I would expect that. Would make an amazing gift for a chess player.

We were looking for a new chess set something that would be more of a feature for our living room and came across this set on another site, it was £100 more than Amazon's seller so we got it here. Really lovely looking set, the weight of the peices is great and the movement as you play the game engages children and adults alike as it feels more alive. When it is sat on the sidetable it looks lovely and often gets positive remarks. Love it.

Expensive? A little, but not when compared to other quality chess sets. And this really is an upmarket item, which demands attention from visitors, as well as being a hugely enjoyable set to play.

I was looking for a more modern looking chess set for our family. Outside of spending $800 on a Man Ray set, this was the next best option! The wood quality is outstanding and the wobble feature is whimsical and fun. The only thing that would make it better is if it came with a box for travel, for now we use the box it came in which works. Highly recommend this set!
