The dark beginning
It is great to read how the Batman story started in 1939. Roy Thomas shows how in the first six years WW II has an influance on the stories. I like the grim Batman better than the campy Batman.

I got this for Christmas and I have got to ...
I got this for Christmas and I have got to say that this helped me while a few hours whilst I waited for the real star of the day (Turkey) to take centre stage, such a treat and a reminder of time that was all too fleeting.

Excellent stories,sanitised background text.
The physical presentation is excellent and the story reprints are well chosen. Rather than censor the racist elements of the stories the text pieces put them in their historical contexts. Roy Thomas does an excellent job of setting the historical scene but he does a very poor job regarding who created what. Bill Finger an Jerry Robinson are barely mentioned. Sole credit is given to Bob Kane which even Kane himself distanced himself from in the late 80s. At the time of publishing. DC and the Finger Family were negotiating credit so this may have been a factor. However Thomas is a talented enough writer to have handled this better.
