George Orwell's 1984 (Max Notes)

Well done. Organized! Clear! Life saver

I bought this as a study aid for my high school son after he read the book for school, and for me as a review so I could discuss it with him. It served my purpose reasonably well, and was somewhat helpful in clarifying my son's understanding.The description says the book is designed to "stimulate independent thought about the literary work by raising various issues and thought-provoking ideas and questions". In this respect it rather failed, but the chapter summaries are helpful all by themselves, and at $3.56 this was a good value for us.

I read "1984" back in the day, before the year had come and gone. Recently a discussion group I wanted to attend was doing the book. I took one look at the full book, and decided that I needed some help! I got these notes and went through them. After attending the group, and listening to other commenters, who probably read the book about the same time I did, I felt like this reference had been a good move. This review hits on the story line, brings up the vocabulary words and reminds you of the major themes. If you can do that in an adult discussion group it's a good thing, as people who hardly skimmed a book will often digress shamefully.There are plenty of modern-day examples to bring up with this book, if you think about the ideas brought up here you'll be able to spout off original thoughts and won't sound like you read the Max Notes. I think there is probably a dissertation in there for someone who'd like to pick apart Orwell's attitude towards women -- which in my modern-day thought pattern, is not very enlightened.

I bought this for my daughter, grade 10. She says the Max Notes are very helpful, perhaps because they're written by a high school teacher. A small price to pay for helpful insights on a classic book. Thanks!

Perhaps "I love it" is overkill, as it's a text for my daughter to use to assist on an assignment. However, when a product is as described, at a reasonable price, and delivered on time then I believe it deserves five stars.

Still the same as I remember reading in the 60s.Erie how similar our political and internet systems remind me of Big Brother. Which is why I purchased this copy. LOLI bought it for my grandchildren to read, In the hope they would understand my references to the book.

Everyone needs to read this book again. Seems to reflect on many of the current cultural and political issues currently happening. A couple of Barron's editorial quotes Orwell. An example is the use of "newspeak" that is actually happening today.

thought it was the actual book but never the less it did remind me of the atmosphere that i remember from my first reading years ago at school

The topics addressed in "1984" are essential. MAX NOTES not only gives understandable summaries and character presentations, but also interpretation questions. This book is great for teachers wanting to prepare worksheets for chapter discussions or/and in search for some good essay topic questions. For students it's also a great book because it gives you an idea what one can see between the lines. Great "Notes"!
