Lovecraft, Henry James, Washington Irving, and more to prey upon your emotions and peace of mind at slumber parties and camping trips, or anytime you want to end the night with a delightful fright! Review: Mmmh leather - My first leather book, an amazing collection of stories in this Review: Classic Tales of Horror...and Mystery and Suspense. - Not all the stories in this book are going to leave you in a state of fear such as you'd expect a 'classic tale of horror' to do. Some are merely suspenseful or mysterious, but that is not to say I didn't find any stories to be genuinely hair-raising. Virtually all of the stories contained are well-regarded works by well-regarded writers. Virtually all of them succeed in creating an atmosphere. How scared you'll be will depend entirely on your own disposition and how receptive you are to language and situations that can at times feel a little dated, and that's no surprise owing to the age of pretty much every tale within. Make no mistake, the stories in here are a choice selection of fiction from the mid-modern era, and you are in for a treat if not already familiar to the material. The makers of this book, Canterbury Press, have done a sterling job not only with selecting the content, but also with its presentation. The cover is a work of art, featuring an embossed graveyard scene, replete with bats, a shining moon, grotesque trees, horrible headstones, and an imposing rendition of the book title in a large dripping font. It all combines to a superb effect, such that I actually like to pick it up before reading, just to look at the cover, as staring at the scene puts me into the mood for reading the content.

Gorgeous!
The book itself is gorgeous; from it’s leather bound cover, to the gold sprayed edges this book is worth every penny! It was clearly designed by a book lover as it even includes a ribbon marker sewn into the book so you can easily keep your place in this long (864 pages long, to be exact) classic horror anthology. It begins with a really interesting summary of the background of the horror genre and how some author’s and novels paved the way for the new generation of horror. There are 55 classic horror stories in total included in this book; with novellas from Bram Stoker to Charles Dickens; Edgar Allan Poe to Arthur Conan Doyle; H. P. Lovecraft to Charlotte Perkins Gilman; this book is the perfect addition to any horror-lover’s library.

Beautifully bound book; great anthology
I decided to read at least one selection of spooky fiction or poetry every day in October, and this anthology is perfect. (I also own Edgar Allan Poe's Collected Works, Grimm's Fairy Tales and Robert Frost's poetry, plus the flexibound Washington Irving from this publisher.) I'm a big fan of Canterbury Classics, and this anthology doesn't disappoint. The quality leather cover is attractive and feels nice. It contains a well-curated selection of tales from a variety of 19th & 20th century American and European authors, including a couple of female authors. (Be sure to read "Afterward" by Edith Wharton and Charlotte Gilman Perkins' "The Yellow Wallpaper".) Printing is clear and a comfortable size to read, on ivory paper that is not too thin, and there is a ribbon page marker. The table of contents includes the date each selection was first published. If you're looking to sample the "best of" classic gothic horror, this book is definitely the way to do it. Well worth the price!

Boa adiquição
Encardenação em couro, cores vivas e brilhantes. As letras são muito pequenas e não há figuras por dentro, mas fica belíssimo na estante
