The perfect salt and pepper shade!
Updated: 2/09/25 I wanted to transition from dyeing my dark brown, straight thin hair to a natural gray and found this hair gloss, and I am so glad I tried it! I go to a salon for low lights every three weeks which piled up as unsustainably costly! This color gloss was so easy to apply and use while in the shower. It is also less messy to apply, seemingly with less harmful chemical ingredients, and less smell than regular hair dyes. I've used all brands of pricey hair colors resulting in my hair thinning and being chemically fried, and itchy and irritated scalp that I decided to take the big leap and go gray. I started slowly by letting my roots grow out to gray without dyeing it (not pretty) and having regular hair cuts to get rid of my colored brunette hair, and then started using this hair gloss to keep my salt and pepper tone. Yes, it does take a while to grow gray but after nearly 3 years now (made feasible by the COVID lockdown and working remotely) my hair seems healthier, thicker, and my scalp less irritated and itchy. In my opinion, this hair gloss also saves me money than having my lowlights done and sitting for 2 hours every 2-3 weeks in a salon than doing something fun outdoors! What a trade off! Shampoo it in while in the shower, wait 15-20 minutes, rinse, and apply your favorite conditioner. Easy peasy!! I had applied it on dry hair sometimes, comb it through, and then let it sit for 10 minutes while I wash/scrub my body while in the shower. Then after 10 minutes, I lather it in and leave it for 5 more minutes before washing it off and applying my leave in conditioner. It seems this added time on dry hair helps keep the color longer and give my hair a more glossy salt and pepper gray shine. I often get compliments on my hair color because it looks naturally graying, not balange or a low lights salon application.

Dark silver from dull gray
Immediate beautiful shine, color enhancement, condition. My salt and pepper, mostly salt, hair looks 200% better after using this product. It's extremely easy to use and since it was my first time, I used a moderate amount for 9 minutes. Wow, my naturally wavy hair is also naturally frizzy, so I never get to wear it loose, always have to flat iron. I was so pleased to see that as my hair air dried, I had shiny waves! After a day, my frizziness was again noticeable, so I flat ironed and was thrilled with my silky, shiny beautifully color enhanced hair. Dark silver that was once dull gray. I just bought more.

I love my hair again.
I have alot of gray hair that is mixed with black. Lately, it has been looking dull, wiry. Decided to try this product, and I am happy with the results. I feel and look 20 years younger, my hair is very soft, healthier, and have a natural gloss.

Read if you are growing out over processed hair
Ridiculously long review I hope helps someone else since I know I’m not the only one with this problem. This is basically a purple mask with slate / black toner. It would probably work as advertised if you have natural unprocessed hair. If you are trying to grow out bleached or over processed hair & go natural this WILL TURN THOSE AREAS LAVENDER. That being said it works better than any of the other countless products I’ve tried. If that’s your situation read on (I am obviously not a hair professional) You cannot simply put it on all your hair and have even results. The bottom half of my hair is way over processed blonde, the middle darker orangey light brown, the top natural salt & pepper (mostly pepper). It will be a game of trial & error with how long you leave it on and you’ll need to build upon it and adjust depending on how often you wash & how damaged the hair was to start. It will darken and lavender your grey and lighter hair but I can live with that - I think it looks better than having all the frizzy orange blond. For me I leave it on 30-45mins. By the second wash it is basically dark, my natural grey and the rest is a dirty grey with a lavender tint in the sun which I can live with while it takes forever to grow. I have never written such a long review but I desperately wish someone else had and saved me all the money I wasted on purple masks & toners. It’s very frustrating to not be able to just go get it fixed without spending over a grand on corrective color. I did have my stylist do toners but it doesn’t last or look that much better, last any longer and was expensive. I think this product is a better solution just do in sections, adjust as you go & accept it’s a matter of good enough - it won’t look like the box. I hope this helps someone else.

Did not work
I have quit dying my hair and an growing it out. It's a painful process. I heard this may tone my brassy highlighted ends so it would blend in to the natural grow out better. I've tried it twice now and neither have worked. The first time I left it on as long as the directions said. Nothing. Last night I left it on for 17 minutes, half afraid it was going to turn my hair purple. Nope, nothing again. So sad! I will say it worked as a lovely conditioner and my hair is soft, but that's not what anyone buys this for.

Stay away if your hair is fragile
I used to use this gloss for years in other colors before I hit menopause; before my hair seriously started to thin. I am a 50 something caucasian woman with baby fine hair. Then I started getting steroid injections into my crappy spine and my hair just got more fragile. Since I've stopped dying it and it's my natural color for the first time in nearly 30 years I thought I would try to gloss it again. Maybe I could get it to shine like it used to after I glossed and toned it. NOPE! Everything's different now. My hair is not accepting of this product anymore. It stayed in my hair approximately 12 minutes before my head was on fire. I lost a good handful of hair rinsing it out; enough so that it clogged the drain. So what did I do? I panicked. I made sure to rinse it and rinse it until I couldn't stand it anymore to make sure I got every bit out. And I used cool water to try and lessen the hair fall. I surely didn't wash my hair after that because I was scared even more would fall out :( After that experience I put it back in an Amazon box and returned it. I can no longer recommend this product to someone who might have thin and fragile hair like mine. If you are on the fence about using this, trust your intuition. I'm not gambling with my hair ever again.

Refined my greys
I wasn't immediately impressed. It was worried about how long this would last and how nice the overall effect would be. I am now won over. What I like is that, while this doesn't dye-to-hide my grey, it gives it a more refined look. Before this, I had dingy-looking greys that made me want to keep dying over them. However, I want to show off my grey hair because it's a sort of badge, IMO! After using this, my formerly rusty-looking greys were more of a steel-grey. That blends in better with my dark brown hair that also has natural auburn mixed in (thanks, Mom!). It's not something that shows a lot in photos, but... I tried to find some old Before pics to compare with more recent ones. My hair is afro-natural, so I co-wash once a week and shampoo about everh 3 - depending on any products used that need to be cleaned out. I also do a clarifying shampoo around every other month. I have co-washed my hair twice with this product in and it's still holding up really well. For someone who needs to wash their hair with shampoo frequently, I still think this would hold up well, just not as long as for my wash routine.

Amazing as a toner!!!
My mom has been going blonde off and on for years, having me always do her hair, so least to say I know quite a bit about toners and blonding. She recently decided she wanted to let her greys out so she wanted to start going grey platinum, we decided it’d be smart to go slow. So the first picture is her after one round of highlights and a toner 3 months ago, and the other is her today after a 20 minute bleach cap and this amazing toner!!! Wow! It left her hair WHITE! Some parts it didn’t grab to due to it being so orange/yellow, we’ll fix that next round and she’ll be good to go! This really conditioned the hair and made it so soft and glossy! Let me just say, if you’re a blonde and NOT using this, what’re you doing??? This is an amazing product! I ordered a bottle of the clear gloss to try it out on my dark brown hair, that’s how impressed by the gloss I was! 10/10!!! Would recommend!

A must....
Love it. So easy to apply. My greys actually felt softer and the shine is amazing.

Actually works!
I had doubts this would be as good as it sounded but it is! I gradually darken my hair by using it as a conditioner and it leaves my hair in good condition, not drying at all. Great way of subtley darkening hair naturally.
