This is a very alkaline cleaning solution, used for dip-cleaning metal parts prior to plating (a necessary step). I divide off a small amount into an appropriate clean jar, and use this vessel to dip clean parts, after which I rinse them in distilled water. From there, they may be plated. Always make sure the parts are cleaned in this fashion- or with other effective methods- before attempting plating, since impurities, fingerprints or other contamination may adversely affect the quality of your plating process. Remember that this solution is quite caustic, and should not be allowed to contact any part of your body. Wear appropriate protective gear, starting with eye protection. Mark your vessels with identifying and cautionary labels, so that you remember what is in each, and other people are able to see warning data. Above all, make sure such compounds cannot be accessed by children.
