Excellent and affordable.
One of the finest bands of all time. This fills a number of gaps in my collection. Highly recommended for amyone who enjoys honest, gutsy, no-frills rock n' roll. RIP Lee Brilleaux.

The roller coaster ride of the Feelgoods from Wilko's departure
A strange box set in the growing low cost no frills box set releases which group five CDs of an act. The Feelgood's best years were definitely their early releases before anything on this set, when they built their fan base around Wilko Johnson teamed with the original three members of Brilleaux, Sparko and The Big Figure. While they never ventured far away from their brand of straight ahead hard rock and R&B after Wilko left and even after Brilleaux's later death with a version of the group still touring and recording, this set shows it has not been an easy ride!First CD chronologically is 1977's "Sneakin' Suspicion" recorded amidst growing discord between Wilko and the rest of the group. By the time of its release Wilko had departed though the album still reached the Top 10 UK album charts. Produced by American Bert de Coteaux unlike their prior all home produced releases, while it gave rise to a hit (the album title) the whole album disappoints compared with what had come before. Whether the producer or the group members were to blame, the whole thing lacks energy and sounds like a bad rehearsal especially as shown in the cover versions of well known rockers "Nothin' Shakin' and "Lights out".Followed quickly in late 1977 after Wilko's departure and replacement by John "Gypie" Mayo on lead guitar, was "Be seeing you" with all its references to The Prisoner TV cult series. Produced by Nick Lowe it was a move in the right direction with more energy and another low placed hit single ("She's a windup") but from this release onwards the group was never to enjoy the success in the LP charts they had before. If you know Lowe's production style from this period then the emphasis on drum sound and raw energy is prevalent on all tracks whatever their pace and mix of original rockers and blues plus soul covers. This box set then proceeds to sadly exclude the group's next two releases ("Private Practice" from 1978 with the group's only Top 10 single "Milk & Alcohol" and 1979's live recording "As it happens") and jumps to 1979's "Let it roll" with what can now be seen was an inspirational choice of well known Blue Horizon producer Mike Vernon. Under Vernon's tutelage the group seemed to shed some (but not all!) of it's rawness and turned in a very varied set of consistently good recordings, using keyboards (piano and organ) plus sax across different tracks. More blues orientated than prior releases ("Shotgun" showed a Mayo guitar performance that proved he could stretch his playing out from the more chopping and short burst style seen on prior releases) the album is for me the best of the five releases included here though sadly sales were poor and it did not chart. The final two releases included are 1980's "A case of the shakes" with Lowe back as Producer and and 1981's "On the job", a live recording which was their last release before Mayo left, followed subsequently by Sparko and The Big Figure, leaving Brilleaux to soldier on through the '80s with changing new group members till his death in 1994. "A case....." sadly leaves a feeling of more of the same (sound, performances and choice of material) as seen in the early releases of this specific combination of the Feelgoods and "On the job" is no match for the earlier 1979 live recording with Mayo of "As it happens", which in turn never scaled the heights of "Stupidity" the live album with Wilko which had reached to No. 1 spot in the UK album charts. Thus overall a bit of a mixed bag box set. If the missing two earlier releases mentioned had been included to replace the first and final releases included here I suspect I would be awarding four stars simply because the group like Wilko's subsequent solo career never achieved the same heights as before. That is reflected in this set though Feelgood fans can pick up a great bargain if they do not already own as separate CDs.

nostalgie!

Dr feelgood were essentially a pub band from canvey island ...
Dr feelgood were essentially a pub band from canvey island Essex, uk. They were a tight knit group of musicians, with Lee Brilleaux,as lead vocal( rip).,and the manic wilko Johnson on lead guitar. The band changed members over thev years ,but their sound remained true to their roots of rhythm and blues.buy it now!
