Whatโs the single most important thing you can do during pregnancy? What does watching TV do to a childโs brain? Whatโs the best way to handle temper tantrums? Scientists know. In his New York Times bestseller Brain Rules , Dr. John Medina showed us how our brains really workยand why we ought to redesign our workplaces and schools. Now, in Brain Rules for Baby , he shares what the latest science says about how to raise smart and happy children from zero to five. This book is destined to revolutionize parenting. Just one of the surprises: The best way to get your children into the college of their choice? Teach them impulse control. Brain Rules for Baby bridges the gap between what scientists know and what parents practice. Through fascinating and funny stories, Medina, a developmental molecular biologist and dad, unravels how a childโs brain develops ย and what you can do to optimize it. You will view your childrenยand how to raise themยin a whole new light. Youโll learn: Where nature ends and nurture begins Why men should do more household chores What you do when emotions run hot affects how your baby turns out, because babies need to feel safe above all TV is harmful for children under 2 Your childโs ability to relate to others predicts her future math performance Smart and happy are inseparable. Pursuing your childโs intellectual success at the expense of his happiness achieves neither Praising effort is better than praising intelligence The best predictor of academic performance is not IQ. Itโs self-control What you do right nowยbefore pregnancy, during pregnancy, and through the first five yearsยwill affect your children for the rest of their lives. Brain Rules for Baby is an indispensable guide. Review: Insightful, Practical, and Backed by Science - This book is a fantastic resource for parents of young children. The author breaks down complex neuroscience into clear, practical advice that can be applied to everyday parenting. I especially liked how it focuses not just on raising a โsmartโ child, but also on fostering emotional intelligence and happiness. The updated edition adds even more useful insights, with research-based strategies that feel realistic and encouraging rather than overwhelming. Itโs well-organized, easy to read, and full of tips Iโve already started putting into practice. Overall, a valuable guide that combines science with real-life parenting. Good value for money and highly recommended for new or expecting parents. Review: Itโs a decent book. Well written. - I agree with other reviewers, I would have loved this book to be written more academically. Itโs targeted to a wide audience/layman reader. Therefore sometimes you can feel it lacks a more solid scientific approach. But, itโs well written/entertaining and fun. Light read and points out in the right direction in case you want to dive into a specific topic. Itโs not the bible, itโs not an absolute instruction manual and thatโs fine by me. I would recommend it. Itโs interesting enough. But, I definitely will not buy any other books on babies and children. There are more efficient ways of obtaining the information you need as a parent. Thatโs just my opinion.

Read when TTC - 100% worth it!
Excellent! We are TTC and both are so happy we read this before pregnancy. We highly recommend! It is both anecdotal and practical whilst being scientific and heartwarming. HUGELY helpful in that in has made us feel like we have a solid arsenal of the best approach to pregnancy and parenting. It's not a book that tells you how to raise a genius, rather how to raise happy, good, kind humans!!! Recommend highly! Tip. I bought the kindle version first and quickly realised even with the "notes" function, that It would be much better to have a hard copy to have at hand, enabling us to refer to whenever. So 100% advise just get a hard copy so that you can highlight and peruse at your leisure in the future.

Common sense parents
This book comes to reinforce my own beliefs regarding parenting with some occasional insight from scientific studies (such as how important exposure to musical instruments is). The fact that there is not a great deal of 'other' things that we were missing out on (especially as first parents) comes as a relief albeit some might argue they don't need a book gor this. It's all in all a good read but don't expect wonder recipes.

Informative and very readable
Brain rules for baby is a simple and well written book for parents on how to maximise their babies potential. It includes ideas, advice and more than a few stories which will make you smile. It an enjoyable and easy read and has a good balance between the scientific elements and the practical ones. The chapter on sleep is useful, but not as good as others. The science is explained well and I really got ideas and inspiration from this book. For some it might be old news (Breast is best - no surprise there), for others it might be thought provoking (No TV before 2 years old). But everyone can take something from this.

Great find
What an amazing book!! I've read practically everything there is to read on baby sleep cycles. This book covers this too. At first I thought it was slow, but once your in your captured by how much the author knows about his subjects(s). I've also read a lot on toddler tantrums and this too discusses this. If you are wanting science - this gives it to you in simple terms. The author also uses really good techniques to explain the more complex parts. I'm a busy simple mother so finding time to read books isn't easy but I was able to read through this before my son changed development stages.

Should be the most recommended baby book!
Iโm the type or person who loves rules and guidelines. I find it very comforting to see a list of things I can do to give my child the best start that I possibly can. That reassurance is solidified by the fact that said rules are backed by studies and explained by an expert of the field. I highly recommend this book to any other parents who want a (mostly) clear list of guidelines.

Great book for new moms to be!
I'm expecting my first baby and of course I have a lot of questions and concerns. This book was great because when you're expecting your first, you receive a lot of advice from everywhere and you don't know what's truth and what's just a myth, but here you can see from a scientific perspective what's happening with your child from pregnancy to 5yo. Its very clear, very easy to read and the advise is actually very intuitive and logical, so it's easy to follow. Highly recommended!!

I love it
I just started reading it, I'm loving the first few pages ngl tho it came a bit kate probably because it was delivered overseas and I'm currently in M.E, i bought a book cover and covered it prior to reading as it's a paperback, to avoid denting it. To sum it up it came in good condition. I hope it's a good read and i hope i can benefit from it too.
