Time's Edge: 2 (The Chronos Files, 2)

Fast paced, complex and fun with in intriguing ending.
I hovered over the 4* button. I save 5 for books that truly knock my socks off. But the truth is, the last three hours of this audio DID just that. The narration was it’s usual excellent standard, but Rysa changed gear and launched this rollercoaster over the precipice of excitement. It starts where the first instalment left off and I was worried to start with because, it didn’t feel as gripping. Rysa increased the complexity - I have no idea how she kept a handle on all the threads, and this didn’t altogether work. That’s the trouble with time. It’s imposdible, unless you have some rules to help control things, it will just mess with your mind.It did, but in an increasingly good way, as I let go trying to figure out what on Earth was going on, and settled in for the ride.Kate still feels like the wrong person to be doing this and the fact that their adolescent plan is getting anywhere, is bizarre. BUT then Rysa addresses that. Yeah In several convincing ways that demonstrate her writing skill.Ok, here’s a comparison. Kate is Luke - Young, childish, no idea what he’s doing. The adults are elsewhere and you witness the dark/seriousness of their actions - and you really do witness it - if you don’t shed a tear, there’s something wrong with you. But they need Luke/Kate. It doesn’t work without her, yet she has do so so much by herself.Intriguing, exciting and I’m expecting more of the sake in the next instalment.

Nothing like as good as first
But I'll persevere to the third book in case it picks up.The plot was so so so dull and it's all filler.

Off track?
It's a good story and builds on the events of Book 1. It's well thought out although the time changes are difficult to follow on occasions. There's quite an amount of superfluous information and at times it is more like a romance than a time travel novel. The author also seems to have a fixation on attitudes in the Southern states and so the book is more political than it needs to be. It's always possible this will be explained in Book 3 so it may be infair to jump to conclusions at this juncture.

Even better
I really enjoyed the first in this series, Timebound, and started this one straight away. I was a bit concerned the first one might turn out to be a flash in the pan and the story would stall, but no such problems! The story continues to develop apace, and considering the central theme of this story is obviously time travel, it is all done in a very clever and highly believable way. The way that characters jump about in both space and time could be really confusing but the author does a superb job of handling this potentially brain-exploding concept and the end result is a real page turner. I just finished this late in bed last night and immediately bought the next one, Time's Divide, and started reading. There is no break in the story, it just carries on. These aren't sequels so much as just a really large book divided up. Possibly the best time travel story I've ever read. Excellent.

The tale goes on and what a tale
I read the first in the series on a recommendation from another great author, Nathan Van Coop. I was hooked. This book is quite dark in places but that is part of the wider plot. The story becomes more riveting as the plot builds to a sudden and unexpected climax. I am off now to buy book 3 in this series. Rysa weaves a detailed and compelling plot around a group of strong characters. If you like time travel stories you will love this book. If you like intrigue and whodunnit, you won't be disappointed.

Frustrating read
This story has the potential to be great but is hampered by a number of things. Firstly there are times when the plot is just too complex and the writing isn't strong enough to narrate this well. You have to read some parts a couple of times and then you still may not be entirely sure what's going on. Then there is the pace. It gets so slow at times and I had to force myself to keep picking it up when I had sort of lost interest. I found myself wanting to know what happens next but not wanting to wade through the pages of internal ramblings. The characters don't have much depth and this prevents you from really caring about what happens to them. It's a shame this book isn't more skilfully written as it could be truly gripping and absorbing. But it never succeeds in pulling you in. It ended on a cliff hanger so now I need to decide if I care enough about what happens next to buy the next book. Seeing as I mainly kept on with this so I could get it finished and out of the way so I could read something better I doubt I will bother...

The weakest of a very strong series - still worth it!
Whilst the weakest of the Chronos files books, it's still very good! Suffering from 'middle book syndrome' I felt it didn't quite work as well as a standalone book, but with thoughts already turning to the concluding book, it didn't really bother me (be aware there are novellas - 1.5 and 2.5 - between the main three books, I didn't find them until afterwards).
