Using this in our 2022 RAV4, where the 12V socket is located somewhat deep underneath the dash. The design is sturdy and securely holds the phone in place, though with a bit of minor wobbliness which is unavoidable with any gooseneck style mount. MagSafe charging works flawlessly. Appreciate the built in USBC outlet and the voltage readout is a sweet bonus as well. Overall this is a great product and would definitely buy again!

Some things just can’t be argued with, like for example that there are certain car and truck models that have an interior design that makes it impossible to install a mount for a cell phone. RV’s, busses and other such vehicles typically have acres of dash space so I guess this doesn’t apply to them. And if you really want to take the chance of using a mount that clips on to your air vents despite the volumes of advice to the contrary, go ahead and do it. And then turn to page 36 to find replacement air vents, if you can find them. The reality is that concept came and went when cell phones fit in the palm of your hand and weighed a couple of ounces, not the ones these days that are almost as large (and heavy) as a paperback novel. The best way to mount a phone is a mount using sticky tape and being incredibly careful that you’re not sticking it to a painted surface that will peel right off, along with a large portion of your car’s trim. A middle of the road, if you will excuse the pun, solution are those ones that plug into a cigarette lighter, if your car has one, but they only work if the plug is very well designed and your lighter socket is rock solid mounted to your car. That’s the style that this one is. By the way another fact that doesn’t seem to get much argument is that a good magsafe car mount is nearly impossible to find, and this one is literally the only one I could find that plugs into a lighter socket, almost every other one either mounts permanently or clips to your vents. THE BEST MAGSAFE MOUNT EVER I have a friend who has a full size SUV and I usually ride shotgun. That vehicle, as large as it is, is one of those with zero places to mount a phone. I found one of the best mounts I’ve ever seen and the entire thing is just a round and nearly flat very strong special magnet. I mount it to the passenger side of the lower console down next to my left leg and when I get in the truck I just pop my phone to it and it sticks like glue even with the manufacturer’s leather case (this is for an iPhone 14 Pro). But my recent model car doesn’t even have room for that, so my best solution won’t work at all for me in my car. WHAT DOES THIS MOUNT DO I’ll admit that when I first saw it I balked at the forty buck price and shopped around for a week. This seemed to be so perfect I thought there must be some other ones out there to compare it to. There aren’t. My auxiliary socket is mounted low on the dash, recessed and there are controls around and above it and the transmission lever right there in front of it. To work the adapter had to plug firmly into the socket, stick out about two inches, then make a sharp right angle turn with a gooseneck attached that could be bent slightly to conform to the need to not block any controls. On paper this one looked ideal, and if it worked in my car it probably would work in a lot of other cars with busy dash panels with no room to install a typical phone mount. I liked the advantage that since I only had one socket available it gave me two USB sockets back and the added bonus of a digital voltage meter to help me assure my car’s battery is in good condition. DOES IT WORK Sadly, here’s the reality check for what could have been the perfect solution, no it doesn’t work - for me. Every car is different and I tried it in my friend’s Prius and it seems like a good idea for that lighter socket that’s located down near the floor. Here’s what doesn’t work in my car though. While there is nothing obstructing it for whatever reason it will not go in deep enough for it to make contact inside the socket, only if I press it in rather firmly will it make momentary contact. Clearly not acceptable. The other issue is that the gooseneck is very firm and only flexes so far, not as much as a typical gooseneck, so it sticks way out toward the passenger cabin and I can’t bend it to curve upward. Unfortunately it sticks out right next to the handle of the shift lever. Also not acceptable. It needs more range of curvature to really be useful. I went back to my friend’s car and thought he could use it but no, there are more issues. Even when inserted all the way the weight of the device plus the weight of the phone is just too much for the socket and it nearly pulls it out of the panel. And the gooseneck is simply too long, it shakes and moves all over the place even on smooth roads. The final thing is just an oddity that I can’t explain but I don’t like it. Both of our cars have good batteries that test in the normal 12.4 -12.9 range. In both vehicles the display on this thing only shows 11.7 which seems like too much of a coincidence. I don’t think I would put any trust into it. WHAT ABOUT HAVING TO USE A SEPARATE CABLE TO CHARGE There is some discussion about the fact that magsafe phones don’t charge without having to plug in a separate short cable. It’s only a few inches long and in no way gets in the way, I guess it just bothers some people that they couldn’t have made it in such a way that the extra cable isn’t necessary. I considered this and immediately determined that this design is not a negative, in fact I believe it is a positive. At home I have several magnetic phone stands that start charging my phone as soon as I attach it. That’s not always a good thing - they suggest sometimes letting your phone drain to a certain level from time to time, not for memory issues like the old nicad batteries, just something that is recommended for battery health. If the mag stand always starts charging my phone without giving me a way to tell it not to I actually consider that to be the negative. I like having the choice of using the cable or not. GENTLE ON MY PHONE I use a case on my phone and if I didn’t the back of it is made out of nearly indestructible glass. The round disk on this charger also has a glass surface, that allows it to make a very tight contact with the magnetic components inside your phone (or phone’s leather case). Being round and a piece of flat glass I can’t imagine how it could possible scratch or damage anything that’s stuck to it, I suspect reviews that mention that may have been thinking of a different product. The same is true for one of the videos that shows a gooseneck mount but it has a totally different digital display, perhaps a different manufacturer? SOME FINAL REALLY ODD THINGS The ads for this mount use the word magsafe, which is only an iPhone feature, at least a dozen times and it’s true that the magnet does hold my phone sufficiently strong even when it’s in the leather case, but for some inexplicable reason they only include two USB-C cables, no lightning cable and there has never been an iPhone made that uses USB-C. That indicates to me that this product was never designed to be used with the phone that they spend so much energy saying it will. You will have to go out and find short lightning cables and buy them, at an additional expense to you. And that vent clip I mentioned earlier that has such a terrible reputation for breaking the louvers on so many cars? Oddly they include one in the box. Even though there whole idea that you’re paying forty bucks for is a lighter socket charger with flexible arm mount, they expect you to throw all that away and convert the magnetic disk to a cheap vent mount style. Unfortunately it doesn’t work, I tried it in two cars and an SUV and the plastic prongs are too thick to fit between the louvers on all three vehicles, it’s like they never even tested it on a real car. YES NO MAYBE If I had a choice of a dozen similar models would I still pick this one? I am still uncomfortable with paying forty bucks, I didn’t think it would be worth it and I still don’t. This is one that’s difficult to put a definite rating on and I can’t agree with putting it at either extreme - it’s neither terrible nor great. I can only recommend it to those who have their lighter socket mounted flat on their console with nothing in the way. If your socket is on the vertical part of your dash this will probably stick too far out and is too stiff to bend upwards. And if the socket isn’t mounted solidly, and realistically most aren’t, it will likely not be able to support the weight and length of the flexible arm plus the weight of your phone. And I have doubts about using it to be a trustworthy monitor of your car battery’s voltage level. I would put this at 3-1/2 stars with the price bringing it down an extra half point.

It works well in my 4th gen 4Runner since my cigarette lighter port is vertical in the console. The magnet is very strong and has no issues holding the phone. I have to fight to get it off actually. The unit is very sturdy but wiggles only because the port is not very tight within the console. The arm is pretty stiff but is maneuverable. I did have to replace the fuse within the unit before using it because it was already blown but works fine now. Overall I am pleased with the item and use it throughout the day since I travel for work. I would buy again for the type of unit this is since my vehicle doesn't do well with vent mounts.
