Primetime Contemporary Art: Art by the GALA Committee as Seen on Melrose Place

Was never able to find or afford the original publication from 1998, so super happy to have this amazing reprint. Loved Melrose’s Place as a kid but never knew that a group of artists hijacked the show, inserting overtly political props into the show’s set, until I got to art school. The show’s producers even started to adjust the plot to focus on these artworks. This book documents all the works (over 100!) that were on the show and later auctioned off to benefit charity. While thin, it is packed with information about the project and looks and feels like a real Sotheby’s auction catalog. One of the great political artworks in the last few decades! Crazy to think it all took place on network television.
