do paintings using this ground need to be framed like a watercolor?

This is a base material of which you apply color on top. I have used it on metal frying pans and metal milk cans. Then sprayed with a protective coating suitable for art work. It only needs framing if you chose to do it on a flat surface and even then, not necessary. Hope this helps.

Will this work on other watercolor brands?

Yes, absolutely. Like most lift aids it can still have a problem with strong pigments (especially reds), but I find it directly comparable to Windsor & Newton's Lifting preparation, and neither one minded me mixing brands a bit!

Is this like a watercolor binder or no?

No, this is like a barrier layer you put down on the paper ahead of (or between layers) so that it's easier to take the paint back down to where the paper was when you put this on. Not perfect, but beats scraping layers out of the paper.

Does this have a safety data sheet for the chemicals it contains?

No it just says this product "contains a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer"

Disappointed

Wanted to “ ground” canvas for water colour but it is difficult to apply onto canvas with brushes or sponge in that it is streaky . It’s like toothpaste texture . Have tried adding water , allowing to dry and Addie g another coat but still difficult . Water colour doesn’t bloom and on another occasion on a different canvas the “ grounding” lifted - very disappointing
