No, they are meant to be used solely in handheld mode.

Q: Are the shoulder buttons clicky (like the normal controllers) or do they go down?

I have no idea how to answer this so I took a video. The buttons fell very good to me. I like to feel buttons moving & don't like too much resistance. They are not squishy & not exactly clicky either.
