Review: Premium Mac Feel, Compact Design — Satechi Nailed It - I finally had to accept that full-size keyboards with number pads just are not for me. They look great on a desk, but having to reach halfway across the planet every time I wanted to use my mouse was getting old fast. My shoulder, wrist, and patience were all filing complaints. So I started looking for something compact, black, premium, and as close as possible to the feel and polish of an Apple keyboard. I’ve tried a lot of options, from ProtoArc to the Logitech MX Keys Mini. They’re all good keyboards in their own way. Funny enough, the ProtoArc came closest to that Apple-style typing feel, while the MX Keys Mini had the better feature set. But the MX Keys Mini, even though it looks great, became pretty finger-fatiguing for me over time. After hours of research, I came across the Satechi Slim X1 and ordered it within about 10 minutes. It showed up the next day, and honestly, it was exactly what I had been looking for. It’s lightweight, has a premium aluminum body, includes backlighting, and the keys feel fantastic. Apple really nailed the scissor-style keyboard feel — the key travel, resistance, and overall typing experience are just comfortable and satisfying. Satechi definitely captured that same kind of magic here. The lack of Touch ID is a bummer, but it is not a dealbreaker. Would I love to have it? Absolutely. Am I losing sleep over it? No. If you’re looking for a high-quality compact keyboard with that clean Mac-style feel, this is the one. It gives me the premium typing experience I wanted without forcing me to do a full upper-body stretch just to grab my mouse.
Review: Best alternate to an apple wireless keyboard. - This is probably the best keyboard you will find if you are looking for something that feels like an apple magic keyboard and works with Windows. Connects easily with Bluetooth, and has compatible keys for either mac or windows. Tip if you are using this with a work computer that requires the CTRL+ALT+DEL combo to unlock, just use fn+ctrl+alt+delete instead. The keyboard is backlit, and has a really nice aluminum shell. It feels premium. This version has a numberpad, which is great for my work, but its still very compact. Its low profile on the desk, and the keys feel solid and responsive. I have yet to confirm the battery life, but it comes with a quality USB C cable for charging, so no batteries needed. It also comes with two rubber knobs if you like to have your keyboard adjusted to slight angle, but be warned that they stick on, and can't be taken on and off. I really like the sound of this keyboard, and its not too noisy so its perfect for an office. Really nothing I can say bad about this keyboard, its honestly a steal at the price.

**Q: Can this be used wired as well? Since the battery inside is not user replaceable, do you just throw away the whole keyboard, or is it dual power?**
A: I don't know why the other user gave you incorrect information. The keyboard 100% has wired mode. Plug a USB-C cord into your computer and the keyboard, then press "FN + Eject Key" on the keyboard (Eject Key is to right of F12). Bluetooth will turn off, the keyboard will be charging, and it will still work with your computer.

**Q: What is the battery life if you have backlight off?**
A: Thank you for choosing Satechi and for reaching out to us. 

We first recommend charging the keyboard for at least 2-3 hours with the included charging cable with a power adapter for a more efficient charge. (18W and up) 

If you are using the backlight all the time at the highest brightness, it can drain the battery quite fast, but it does have a standby shut-off mode, that kicks in after 30min of non-usage. You can change the settings so it does not completely shut off.


With no backlight on, the battery is about 60hrs.

If you would like to use the backlight and not worry about the battery, you can also use the keyboard in wired mode. While using one of the two cables included, you can use the key combination (fn+usb/eject) to turn off the Bluetooth and use it in wired-only mode. A green light will stay lit on the top right when in this mode

**Q: Will this keyboard work ok with a pc and android device as well? i would assume so....**
A: Yes. The Satechi Slim X1 Bluetooth Backlit Keyboard will be compatible with Windows and Android Devices.

**Q: Is this backwards compatible with bluetooth 2.1? i cant get it to connect to my macbook (late 2008) eventhough my os is up to date...**

I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN AN AMAZON REVIEW despite buying things on Amazon for years. This review is true. I tried 5 different keyboards and the Satechi Slim X2 and the Satechi Compact are #6 and #7 to try. I use Mac and love Magic Keyboard but it does not have backlight. I also wanted something small but that also had the number pad (useful for Sibelius). I wanted bluetooth connectivity and a similar typing experience to the Magic Keyboard. Many offerings have the CTRL key and FN switched in position which bothers my hot key routine. The Logi MX is excellent however the backlight shuts off and is activated by motion, therefore it is constantly going out and there is no way in the software or hardware to adjust this, as of writing. I am very glad I found these Satechi keyboards because they are the only ones that do exactly what I need: - backlit - backlit stays on - all keys are in the correct place for mac - the typing experience is similar to quality of Magic Keyboard - they are compact - include number pad The Satechi Compact is slightly thicker, probably of equal thickness to Magic Keyboard, and the X2 is slightly less thick. The Compact has rounded corner keys and the X2 has the square keys like on Mac. They are both excellent so far and I am returning the other keyboards. The X2 is more like the Magic Keyboard experience because of the square corner keys but they both feel the same otherwise. I am wondering if the Compact has better battery life as it is slightly more thick. But I just got these today so only time will tell. I am keeping both - one will live on my desk and one will live in my bag for travel. Unless the battery life turns out to be terrible I am glad to find these keyboards. I highly recommend. I don't care for writing reviews but I am very satisfied that I found these after quite a search that I felt inclined to share, which is very rare for me. The X2 could basically be a Mac product if it had the logo - it really matches it well and it has backlight. Odd that Apple does not make Magic Keyboard with backlight. Thanks for reading I hope this review saves you time and toil. UPDATE 11.24.23 So far so good. I have been using the Slim X2. It is very similar to Magic Keyboard. I have not charged it yet even from the package opening. I read on the Satechi website (which is good) that the battery in the X2 is 1300 mAh and the battery in the Compact is 700 mAh. This is interesting because the Compact is slightly wider and thicker. In any case, both have good build quality, especially the Compact. It has some really nice metal binding and I think the body of both are aluminum or some other metal. I will probably choose the X2 first because the keys are square it is more reminiscent of the Magic Keyboard and the battery capacity is listed as being greater, though I am not sure at this point that this is an important consideration. One final note - the backlight does fade out if not typing and is reactivated with motion of fingers on keyboard. But unlike the MX keys the fade out does not happen immediately (was really annoying) and it takes approximately 60 seconds of inactivity for the fade to occur. This is a good thing. Also if the backlit setting is at full brightness when the fade happens it does not completely fade to zero it seems, which is also good. I am very happy with the X2. The Compact is really good too. The build quality is wonderful.
