The speakers come with a y adapter so you can hook the speakers to the headphone plug on the computer the plug from the speaker and the y adapter are marked witch one to plug into the adapter so to be able to use it with only one 3.5 mm jack on the computer

Q: Can the volume knob cut off the power supply

Since the volume knob controls the turn on and turn off and volume control i have to say or answer yes that it would turn off the speakers. hope this helps.
