Perfect for in cabin baggage on flights.
I needed a new bag and ordered one of these. As soon as it arrived, it was obvious it was going to be a great bag and so, naturally, my son stole it. I ordered a second one - don't worry. Great value for money, well made and with carry handles plus rucksack straps which can be hidden away. The quality of the fabric is good and I suspect it will last a good number of years, the pockets are well padded with a top smaller pocket, ideal for documents and small items. Next to that is the laptop pocket which will take a full sized laptop although I use a Surface which the bag swallowed. There is room for two devices or a device and documents/folder/notebook. The main luggage area is enough for a man to carry two or three weeks worth of stuff - women, maybe a week, we all know what you're like. It's a good size with a net zip pocket and with careful packing fits everything you would need. My son and I used ours on a week's trip to Morocco and the Sahara and everything easily fit. The final pocket is really only for the straps to be hidden away, but it will also take items whilst the straps are not in use. I wouldn't recommend putting anything important in this part of the bag because the zip is open when the straps are being used, so not as secure. There is also an expansion zip for the main compartment so that you can fit more in. However, be warned; if you intend to take the bag as cabin baggage, especially on Ryanair, using the expansion will take the bag over the minimum dimensions. However, we noticed that as we wore them like a rucksack, no one gave our bags a second glance - they are at the limit of the dimensions and we thought we might get checked. However, they fitted, when full into the Ryanair cages used to check bag sizes, so it was all good. Sits well on your back when carrying it and has carry handles like a suitcase to carry it vertically or horizontally. All in all, a great purchase and fully recommended. Only downside is having two identical bags we sometimes got mixed up - different colours might be nice.

Absolute bargain . Why pay more??
I can't believe I got this for just 18 quid . Fantastic bag , loads of storage and robust too . Great size for a five day trip . Comfortable to carry and not too heavy . Can't wait to fill it up again . Recommended .

Probably the maximum size you can possibly go whilst still being able to call it a backpack/rucksack
Probably the maximum size you can possibly go whilst still being able to call it a backpack/rucksack. One you've put all your clothes and etc in for your holiday, it's on the limit of what you can call a backpack. I've used it to fly with EASYJET a couple of times and didn't have an issue. I had to slide the big bag under the seat infront of me, leaving only a narrow gap for one of my legs down the side (You need to pay extra to have a carry-on that could go in the overhead storage). The tightening straps are useful to pull tight so it doesn't look as heafty in size. There is also straps inside so you can pull tight to compact your clothes a bit more. The bag also has a laptop sleve at the back, which is difficult to slide your laptop in when the rest of the bag if full of clothes etc, but once you get it in it's fine. I put my laptop in a foam cover for extra protection - sometimes you forget how big the bag is and occasionally bang it on a lampost of fence as your walking by. The zips etc are all high quality, no issues there. the flap/storage bit at the front is quite useful and big, would be ideal if you have a really small laptop or ipad - lots of extra pockets in there too for external hardrives and battery packs - Overall it's a high quality bag, I'd probably only ever use it for the low cost airlines because it's the biggest backpack you can get that can fit under the seat infront of you - The low cost airlines hardly ever check the sizes or weight of carry-on bags (that's if you go straight through security and don't go to the check-in desk) they make everyone queue up ages before it's time to get on the plane, so when the time comes, they're under pressure to get everyone on the plane because passengers have been waiting so long - they don't bother checking anyone.

It will in fact securely take a 17" laptop. Nicely made and excellent value for money.
I was initially a bit concerned that the "Amazon Basics" moniker might imply inferior quality. However my fears were quite unfounded and this really is a very well made, and practical bag. You can have it on a single shoulder strap, or wear packpack style. There's also some straps look like they would do for fastening to a baggage trolley. Perfect for short trips, as there's easily enough room for 3/4 days worth of clothes. For this trip, the bag wasn't bought for carrying a laptop, however I found that the internal the laptop compartment will securely take a 17" laptop (i.e. the computer is fully covered and the retaining strap will fasten). This is bigger than the 15" in the description, and I would suggest Amazon update their advertisement. Particularly when I've just returned a supposedly 17" laptop rucksack, which turned out would only fit a smaller machine. Overall, very impressed.

Superb item and in no way 'basic'
Bought for short trips in Spain and visits to the UK. It is perfect for what I wanted, in fact it surpassed my needs and expectations. I walk with a cane so really a pull along bag was no good for me, but with choice of shoulder straps, which hide away in a pocket on the back, a single, removable shoulder strap which is supplied, and top and side carrying handles, it gives all the options I need. It is rugged and well made, four plane trips and 8 train trips have not left a mark on it, and with plenty of pockets and a huge packing hold, just same as suitcase it swallows everything I care to take. My only slight gripe was the front pocket DOD not have lock fittings like the main storage, but a small drill through the two zips pulls sorted that out a travel lock can now be used. I could go on, I wont, just buy it, you wont be sorry.

Cabin Size with Compartments + Waist Strap
Great size, with a good number of meaningful compartments. This was also the only one of its kind I managed to find that has a waist strap. Excellent for short trips, or as carry-on when you don't have enough hands to drag more than one wheeled luggage.

One of the best designs out there for a "onebag" carryon convertible backpack/shoulder bag. Max carryon size.
Great looking in black. The smooth-finish, semi-ballistic weave exterior isn't too shiny, it just has a nice low-gloss sheen, but it sheds pet fur unlike "canvas" style fabrics. The laptop slot is ingenious - the side towards my back is well-padded, as expected, but the side on the interior is unpadded, allowing the fabric to drape around the laptop edges, and thereby "reclaim" otherwise lost laptop compartment space. This is a classic, albeit well-designed and beautifully made, "onebag" - a term coined by blogger Doug Dyment to describe convertible suitcase/backpack carry-ons that are efficient enough to replace checked luggage. Rick Steves has also been a big advocate of the "carryon only" philosophy and rectangular (for maximum interior volume) convertible backpacks. This AmazonBasics is virtually a clone of the eBags TLC Mother Lode Weekender Convertible, which is a good thing - I've had both years-ago and recent Motherlode editions, and they are cleverly designed. My one gripe about the Motherlode line is "feature creep" - too many compartments, clever but hard to use snap-out water bottle slots, etc. SO the AmazonBasics is a slightly simpler version of the Motherlode - for about half the price. Size is maximum carryon size based on United Airlines' spec - 9x14x22. Unlike a lying wheelie, however the AmazonBasics is really 9x14x22 - wheelie makers usually don't count their wheels or protruding top and side handles (the handles on this AmazonBasics lie pretty flat). Main compartment has tie-down straps that come straight off the bottom edge, compared to eBags which are routed through clips up the sidewalls first. Tie down straps off the bottom edge tend to compress packing cube edges more than their flat tops, pulling the packing cube edges away from the sidewalls. The only interior organizing slot/pouch is a flat 2/3 width, flat mesh zipper pouch. I think this should have been full width. Outside, there are two slots. The outermost slot is "flat" with zipper slight below the actual slot top. This is mostly good for - LOL - magazines (actually printed magazines? yeah, right) or a newspaper, stuff that isn't too thick. I'd be reluctant to even shove a scarf in here Behind the flat zipper slot is a real "compartment", basically an add-on to the lid but accessible from the outside. It opens with a u-zipper, pulling down from the top (no opening side-to-side book style). You can fit a light wind or rain jacket in here, but fleece or a hooded rain parka will create a bulge. There are two pen slots on the body-side panel, with drop in solid slots at top and drop in mesh slots at bottom. These are designed for flat items; an Amazon Fire HD 8 without a case fits easily. I don't think any of the slots here are suitable for phone or passport, you should have a waistpack, neck pouch, or "personal item" sized handbag or small daypack for stuff that needs organizing. Me, I only care about room for the following: 1. Packing cube for a couple travel pants and couple polos or short sleeve sport shirts; 2. Combination packing cube for underwear and socks. 3. Room for light sweat pants or longjohns, and light fleece, for pajamas. 4. Bathroom kit, in a dopp kit-style sil nylon zip pouch. 5. Chargers and cables kit. 6. Laptop and tablet (ok, in this case the front panel drop-in table slot is handy). 7. Left over room for a fleece and rain shell spread top to bottom in the interior main compartment. and Thin fabric shelled, t shirt weight lined, casual runners or hikers jacket in the external zipper compartment, to keep me warm on the flight. So, basically, I can underpack this thing outbound, using the handy exterior compression straps to keep stuff from shifting and also to slim down the profile (which makes gate check agent happy). Inbound, I loosen the compression straps, unzip the expansion panel, and stuff the bag with souvenirs - and treat it as checked luggage when I leave, knowing that if it is temporarily lost I'll already be home and can live without it for a while. $49.95 is a crazy price. This is worth $99 and would still be a bargain compared to name brands.

Great looks meets Great Features and Functions
After being highly disappointed with Osprey's current price hike's, leave it to Amazon Basic's to come to the rescue with a great carry-on backpack. Don't let the low price of $34.00 (which I got the bag for) fool you. The Amazon Basics Carry-On Travel Backpack has most of the functions of the more expensive Farpoint 40, except for the lack of a water bottle holder. That to me is not a deal breaker which can be fixed with an cheap after market water bottle holder from the dollar store. The one area that shocked me, is how well this bag is made at this price point. It has that rugged feel that is daring you to throw it down the stairs, and come back for more punishment. A few reviews have complained about some of the zipper pulls breaking. Again, this isn't really a con, when you can buy a few spare zipper pulls at the dollar store. This even has a place to store a laptop for the Icing on the cake. Even if the bag only last 3 years of use, at only $34.00 your still ahead of the game in savings. You won't find a bag with all these features and functions at this price point.
