## Description

It is August, the lettuce is long gone and the spinach bolted weeks ago, but on your fence a red-stemmed vine is still covered in glossy green leaves. You pick a handful for tonight's soup, and there will be more next week. Red Malabar spinach (Basella rubra, also called Ceylon spinach, Indian spinach, vine spinach or climbing spinach) is a heat-loving tropical vine grown for its edible leaves and tender tips. It is known as alugbati in the Philippines, mong toi in Vietnam, pui shak in Bengali cooking and saan choy in Cantonese. It is not a true spinach, which is why it keeps producing through hot, humid summers. Soak seeds overnight or nick the hard seed coat, then sow 1/4 inch deep in warm soil after your last frost, or start indoors 6 weeks early. Seeds sprout in 10 to 21 days. Plant in full sun to part shade, 12 inches apart, with a trellis or fence for the 6 to 10 foot vines. Keep soil evenly moist; dry spells cause early flowering and bitterness. Begin light harvests in about 50 to 70 days. The plant is frost tender and grows as a summer annual in most of the U.S. Use the leaves raw in salads or cooked in soups, curries, dal, stews and stir-fry. The leaves are succulent and thicken soups like okra. Pinch vines often for bushier growth, and remove berries if you do not want it to reseed. Every packet holds 30+ seeds, hand-packed in the USA by our small, veteran-owned family business. If your seeds don't sprout, message us and we'll make it right.

## Features

- FRESH GREENS IN AUGUST HEAT: By July your regular spinach has bolted and turned bitter. Red Malabar spinach is just getting started, climbing your trellis in glossy green leaves on bright red stems and giving you fresh greens until frost
- A SPINACH THAT LOVES SUMMER: Malabar is not true spinach. It is a tropical vine (Basella rubra) that thrives in the hot, humid weather that ends cool-season greens, so you can keep picking tender, heart-shaped leaves all summer long.
- GROW IT UP A TRELLIS: Plant after your last frost in warm soil, full sun to part shade, 12 inches apart. Vines climb 6 to 10 feet, so give them a fence, trellis or large pot with a support. Frost kills it, so grow it as a summer annual.
- COOK IT LIKE SPINACH: Known as alugbati, mong toi and pui shak, it shines in soups, curries, dal, stir-fry and salads. The juicy leaves naturally thicken soups and stews the way okra does. Pick young leaves for the mildest flavor
- 30+ SEEDS, SLOW TO START: The hard seeds take 10 to 21 days to sprout, so soak them overnight or nick the coat, then sow 1/4 inch deep in warm soil. Pinch the tips for bushier vines and pick off berries to keep it from reseeding.
- GROW WITH CONFIDENCE: Our Red Malabar spinach seeds are hand-packed in the USA by a small, veteran-owned family business, and we stand behind every packet. If they don't sprout, message us through desertcart and we'll make it right. Not sure when or how to plant? Send us a message and we'll help you get growing.
