## Description

Spike Milligan s anarchic and surreal comedy sketch show Q5 was first shown on BBC Two in March 1969, six months before the launch of Monty Python s Flying Circus. The Python team admit it gave them carte blanche to up their own silliness quotient, but their own TV days were over by the time Spike was offered a second series, Q6, in 1975. Qs 7, 8 and 9. This 5-disc set collects all the surviving shows together for the first time. Four episodes of Q5 were wiped, but the three that remain changed the face of TV comedy forever, ushering in new generations of alternative talent from Kenny Everett and Not the Nine O Clock News to Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Spike is joined as a performer by John Bluthal, Peter Jones, Bob Todd, Chris Langham, Julia Breck and John Rappaport, and in the early shows by Richard Ingrams, John Wells and Fanny Carby. Shambolic sets and rough-and-ready wardrobes set the scene for comedy mayhem, and sketches and gags stop abruptly, overlap or repeat for maximum confusion. A comedy Hitler is a frequent abrasive presence, world leaders of the day are roundly mocked, and madcap skits include an interview with the Queen s chicken, a grandmother-hurling contest, Jehovah s burglars, the smallest police station in the world and the irresistibly dotty Pakistani daleks. The fact that Spike had gone there probably enabled us to go a little bit further than we would otherwise have gone.

Review: Excellence Indeed - I knew what to expect but the quality surpasses my initial expectations. Sad that the BBC, in their wisdom!, managed to lose the other ones but in retrospect, I haven't laughed so much for years, since the originals were broadcast. Forget any other moaning Wokes complaining of this and that as this, warts and all, is the big deal with Spike doing the upmost to entertain and it may grate against some (sad) reviewers but its Milligan at his best (apart from the Goons) which is subjective anyway. Watch it for what it is/was at the time and this predates Python but all the same. Hilarious, OTT, funny, daft and warm. I love it and sadly, we'll never see anything like this broadcast again :-(
Review: Spikes Anarchic, Machine-Gun Humour, - absolutely bonkers, but also very funny. - A must buy for any fans of Spike Milligan. Consists of 5 disks. All disks played well in my PC`s DVD drive. (I used VLC to play them, and it had no problems at all). The show ran from 1969 to 1982 and was definitely NOT "politically correct", but bear in mind that this was 50 years ago. (Different era & different values..). As the title says, this is "The Almost Complete Q".. (The final series was called "Theres a lot of it About" and is not included with this set). From Wikepedia:- "Various reasons have been suggested for the title. One possibility is that it was inspired by the project to construct the Cunard liner QE2, launched in September 1967, which was previously codenamed Q4. Another theory is that Milligan was inspired by the BBC 6-point technical quality scale of the time, where "Q5" was severe degradation to picture or sound, and "Q6" was complete loss of sound or vision. This was extended by some engineering departments to a 9-point scale, finishing at "Q9". According to Milligan's autobiography, the final series was renamed There's a Lot of It About after the BBC felt the public might find Q10 too confusing."

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A unique collection from greatly missed genius
*by G***C on 8 February 2019*

This is an amazing set which brings the memories of a unique comic genius flooding back. Initially it took a couple of episodes to fully hook back into Spike's surreal humour after decades of exposure to today's relatively safe style of comedy, but once I was back in the zone every second is a gem. It's incredible to see his cast of regular trusted supporting actors in full flow. It's easy to see why he cast them all again and again, especially the incomparable John Bluthal. The chemistry is incredible and they all seem to be having the time of their lives. This clearly wasn't just a pay cheque to them. My only disappointment is that the set doesn't include Spike's final series, "There's a Lot of It About" which was Q in all but name (apparently the BBC felt the name Q10 would be too confusing for some reason???). Even more sadly, there's doesn't seem to be any kind of DVD release of TALOIA anywhere, so at the moment this is the most comprehensive collection of Spike Milligan's self-written TV output it is possible to own. A word of warning for the sensitive though - this is comedy from the 70s and early 80s. It is edgy and a good amount of the humour naturally reflects the time. It is warm-hearted, never nasty and always in service to the absurd, but politically correct it is not, so if you're very easily offended you're probably best to avoid. For anyone else with a love of the absurd though, this is a set that shouldn't be missed.
