Q: Does the switch have contacts or is the output for relay control?

No switch. solid state output. can connect and operate a relay, though.

Q: will this activate a separate 12 volt LED light without a relay?

Yes it will. I used this sensor for a relay latching circuit and it worked fine. To answer your question I temporarily removed the relay to test that the LED would light by the sensor alone. It worked perfectly. Mine was connected so that the black output wire was connected to the cathode (- side) of the LED. Did not test for opposite polarity.
