Beautiful timeless and inspiring
I grew up in America and this book was in my elementary school library (Dewy Decimal System, anyone?) but once I discovered it, it was checked out to me more often than not. The stories are wonderfully told and the illustrations and timeless. This book sparked my interest in fables myths and legends and my interest in drawing. I recently purchased this book for my friend’s daughter as a birthday present. Her parents have confirmed that she is finding it as fascinating as I. I am so glad they have updated this version with a bit about the D’Aulaires family and the writing and illustrations. It really is a wonderful book...I might have to get myself a copy, too.

Fantastic book!
Great book. I've got it for my 9-year old who is studying greek mythology in school at the moment. She was absolutely delighted. We spent many hours reading the book and discussing the stories. The book is written in a simple language for 9-10 year olds, but probably anyone younger will find it hard to understand. Many concepts are explained simply and without extra ambiguity. Those who knows greek mythology may remember that gods relationships were a pure incest most of the time (i.e. Zeus and Io had an affair and Io was Zeus' neice and so on...) However, the wording in the book is such that it does not pose the question to young minds about having the relationship "other than being friends" with anyone related to them. Book also illustrates how ancient greeks explained the change of seasons and other things in the nature. I believe it is one of the things that child must have. P.S. The book is also a great value for money and the soft cover one is fairly large and presented well.

My favorite book as a child, excited to share it with my son.
An older copy of this book was given to me when I was about about 10 years old. It was my favorite book for many years, I must have read some of the stories hundreds of times. The illustrations are beautiful and evocative. The language is well graded for children but not too simplified; some books gloss over the nuance of the myths. I'd forgotten about this book until I read Neal Stephenson's 'Fall' and it brought back all my memories about the book. I've bought this copy for my son, who is still a bit young to read it on his own, but I look forward to reading it to him at night.

Superb superb superb book
This is one of the BEST books I have ever come across. It is just absolutely brilliant - some people criticise these Greek myths because of the large number of difficult names but if you take it easy and take time pracising the names together [which is a laugh] it gets easier and more enjoyable. The stories are perfect in length and each has a moral and there is lots and lots to learn here. Highly recommend this magnificent work and thanks a lot to the other people who recommended it.

My daughter loves this book!
I ordered this book for my 10 year old daughter who is studying Greek Myths at school. She hasn't put it down since it arrived! It's a great first introduction to the subject. The text is easy for a child to interpret and the illustrations are beautiful and colourful. I have even read through it myself and have also enjoyed reading it out loud to my younger son as an educational bed time story. Only complaint is that the last 30 or so pages in the book were somehow put in upside down and back to front, so when we get as far as page 162 we have to turn the book around! Well, i suppose it makes it unique! :D Overall we love the book and I'm sure my kids will still be looking at it in years to come when it's dropping to bits and the cover is hanging off.

Best book ever for children who can read!
I loved this book as a child, so bought it for my daughters 9th birthday. She also adored it - we have read the whole book through and she wants to start again. Highly recommend this book - the stories are timeless and will be referenced throughout life, and yet are fascinating for children as well, and the illustrations are breathtaking and make you think.

A classical education in an era of bubblegum media.
Bought for my 10 year old granddaughter and she is enjoying it so far. As a fan of Harry Potter she likes the mystical and magical elements of the tales. A good introduction to greek myths but it’s a pity there is no children's version of Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
