Q: With a change of lnb would this work in Africa?

It will work in Africa as-is. No need to change anything, just point the dish at the desired satellite (which are different satellites than are visible in the UK, so different set of available channels). Just as in the UK you will only be able to receive the free-to-air channels with the supplied receiver, not any subscription channels. Being a small dish it is not suitable for satellites that have a weak signal in the area you are in.

Q: Does the tv need to be a smart tv?

The TV does not need to be a smart tv but it needs to have an HDMI input. Mine does not have an HDMI so i bought an adaptor to convert HDMI to SCART and that works fine. I hope this helps. These adaptors are usually below £20 and can be bought on line. Be aware that the alignment of the dish is very critical but once aligned you can receive a very good picture and sound. Q: will this work in the highlands of scotland

Hi There, To work the satalite dish has to have a totally un restricted line of sight view to the SE. Trees will seriously effect the signal strength and quality ansd no service will result. You will need a great deal of patience to align the dish acuratelly both angular direction and azimuth but this is common to all dishes. The compact system is well made and good value for money. Once aligned you will get plenty of stations to watch and in really good quality. I have no hesitation in recomending it. As a matter of preference i adapted a work lamp tripod to mount the dish on and don't worry about hight off the ground as it will work from your A frame on the caravan so long as there is no obstruction.
