You only need to do the activation once, basically activation sets up and start the 30 days bundle of 5GB data / 3000 mins / 3000 texts. You can do the activation anywhere in the 71 destinations, including the US or any part of Europe.

How to activate the sim card

Activation:

1. Insert the SIM into an unlocked phone. 
2. Enable "Data Roaming" in phone settings, then wait for the signal. 
3. A few SMS text messages will arrive from Three UK informing you the phone is being set up. The last message will ask you to power off then on. That's it, all done, it is as simple as that.

The SIM will work 100% if you just remember these 3 basic steps:

1. Make sure you are using an unlocked GSM phone such as from AT&T and T-Mobile, CDMA handsets from Sprint, Verizon will not work.  Unless it is one of the newest phones where you can switch to "LTE/ GSM" mode within network settings.   
2. Turn on "data roaming" in phone settings.    
3. Check APN settings if you cannot surf the internet in below link. When you first insert the SIM, Three UK will send you a few texts, ONE OF WHICH IS TO SET YOUR PHONE UP FOR THE CORRECT APN SETTINGS.  most users just ignore it, and hence problems later !

Always remember you are using a SIM from the UK, and as such, always quote your number in the international prefix e.g. +44 7xxx xxxxxzxx. With 2 SIMs, you can call each other for FREE (irrespective where you are in the 71 destinations) upto 3000 mins /texts per SIM.

Calls to any European or UK numbers are allowed (upto 3000 minutes and 3000 texts) ONLY whilst you are in Europe, does not include calls back to the US. Therefore calls to the USA will require additional credit, which you can add to your account any time by buying a top up voucher from us or other third party online resellers. You can only buy credit from Three UK if you have an UK credit card.

His may have already been covered, but..  so we can receive texts with the sim but not send to a US #?

Hey sending texts to the US costs 2p per text, so you need to top up the sim, to provide additional credit. But you can use the 5GB data to send texts free from voip services such as skype or whatsapp

Can this card be used to call the united states from Switzerland and France?

Accepted Answer

No unfortunately not, the 3000 mins can only be used to call UK numbers from any of the 71 Feel at Home destinations, or European numbers WHILST you are in Europe. However you can use the 5GB data to call USA using VOIP services such as Skype and WhatsApp.
