It is held by magnetism then. The covers are cut precisely to cover each but not all the way to the edge. So the laptop natural closure is not affected in anyway. To answer you question, yes there is a gap. On the bottom cover there are 2 notches at the front, higher than the rest of the cover. this is the only place where the top and the bottom nearly meet. I think these notches are just to hold the bottom cover securely. **Q: Will it work if I only want to use the bottom part?** A: Yes. The top shell and bottom shell are two separate parts.
