The Story of Philosophy

Written quite a while ago but still well worth reading.

My grandfather has been studying philosophy for over 40 years and recommended this book to me. This book he says is his favourite philosophy book and I can see why. With the intellect and wit of Durant this book is like a tour of all the major philosophers throughout history.

Alongside Bertrand Russell’s History of Western Philosophy, this is probably the next best book to buy. It is a book I thoroughly enjoy dipping into from time to time, and now that the kindle version is available, it can be read almost any time and anywhere. I should also mention Durant’s other major work: The Story of Civilization. These volumes (11 of them) also contain much philosophy. But unfortunately, most seem still out of print. Even many of the kindle versions aren’t yet available. But if you’re looking for a mix of history and philosophy, these works are admirably readable and a make a great companion to his philosophy.I hope you found my review helpful.

A book to read and to refer to many times again! A good source material for further reading. I find Will Durant's style of writing fascinating. It is as if you are reading a lively story, drafted in a way that is creative, elegant and easy to follow.

A great introduction to anybody looking for insight into the study of being human. Read this and find the areas of philosophy that interest you most, find a book specialising in that area and boom! You're a philosopher! Impress people at parties! Get shouted at in pubs! Maybe gain an understanding of how we constantly conspire to think our way to conclusions which have no basis in logic and by doing so, improve your own decision making. Decided to buy this? I bought this especially for the chapter on Kant. It has been said that Kant is a headache waiting to happen, but an internet search suggested Will's chapter on him was good. I agree; things are clearer. I must admit, though, I have not read all the other chapters (except for one), but the writing is both pleasantly prose-like and clear.

A good, brief introduction, all be it somewhat dated. For a more comprehensive (and expensive) survey some will prefer Bertrand Russell.

Great chapters on Plato, Aristotle, Francis Bacon

The lives and thoughts of western philosophers woven into history. The author describes the lives of the philosophers and the influences on their thinking, their philosophies and compares them to earlier and contemporary thinkers. He adds insight through documenting public criticisms and finally adds his own personal thoughts. Well written with good flow and continuity. The author only superficially mentions eastern thought and weighs his own opinion heavily (see his comments on Stoicism). The distinction between the authour's thought and the philosopher's thought is occasionally blurred by the authors style. Well written, thoughtful, very interesting and fairly easy ro read.

Reading this book was like taking a tour of human thought. Mr. Durant is remarkably neutral in his analysis and sometimes a touch prone to exaggeration. The best thing about the book is the middle ground between giving too much and too less details. No wonder it is one of the most beloved books of all time.

Amazing, I wish I had this book as I was studying in School! It's just wonderful and has made me really enjoy this subject, which for some reason isn't NUMBER ONE in our current Education system.
