Brain Games Kids

My mother got several of these Brain Game books for my father when his cognitive faculties were beginning to diminish, but he had no interest in using any of them. So I wound up with them and found, to my surprise, that I really enjoyed working with the varied mental challenges. In particular, they eased me into solving logical quandaries that I'd carefully set up my everyday life to avoid.This particular edition was the next in the series, so I ordered it, and now that I've worked my way through it, all I can say is Yikes. Either this series is still being cranked out as a loss-leader and afforded no editorial care, or the publisher is on an austerity kick and fired all his proofreaders and fact checkers. I've never seen a puzzle book with so many glaring errors -- both in the games themselves and the answers provided at the end of the book.Some of these errors, admittedly, provide an extra, unintended, mental challenge -- as in trying to work out a quotation when the letter boxes don't match up with the words, or realizing that a solution to a problem is simply wrong or presented as unique when it's one of several possible answers. But feeling momentarily superior to a poorly edited puzzle book doesn't entirely mitigate a sense of irritation.Don't misunderstand me. I still like the general format to which this book is faithful, and I've enjoyed many of the puzzles and games therein, so I'd say it's worth buying if you like this series as a whole. But, really, the project editor on this edition may need to rethink his or her career path.

This is a fantastic book for our 6 year old. I just noticed now that they suggest it for 9 year olds / 4th graders. I think it can totally skew younger. Some games/challenges she doesn't understand, but she asks us and we explain it, and then she learns something new. The word searches and mazes and many others she can do independently. This book has accompanied us in airports, on planes, at restaurants, in the car, even at home, and she's totally engrossed. Love it. Final anecdote: We were sitting in a restaurant last week, and this nice couple next to us were getting up from their table after paying their bill. They leaned over, and I had that brief moment of 'hope our family dinner didn't kill your date vibe', but this is what they said: "We eat here every week, and this is the very first time we've seen a child without an iPad. What's she working on? So great to see a child without an iPad, and to see the parents talking to their kid too." Lol. I'm buying more!

My sister loves talking in the car... Which is cute because she's little but sometimes we just need a little quiet on those early morning, stressful rides everywhere - this really helped her keep her mind going. It also was nice helping her with them if we ever needed to wait in the car for extended periods of time to give her something to do. I just stuffed this book in the back seat with some other stuff and its worked out great. Lots and lots of puzzles, it lasted a while, I didn't expect it to be such a hit.

We purchased this to provide our son with some educational and entertaining activities during a road trip. This is perfect for younger children. As a first grader, her whizzed through the "warm up" section giving him immediate success. He enjoyed himself so much that he never tired of the book when it was in rotation (we switched out activities every 2 hours to keep him entertained the entire trip). 4 stars only because I feel they've over estimated the age range for the book

This is an introductory puzzle book for my 10 year old daughter who has dyslexia. I like that the games are varied and once she understands how to go about solving the puzzle, she feels very confident in her ability. She has been known to get easily overwhelmed with puzzles but she really enjoys this book. The crossword puzzles and other word puzzles help her work on her spelling skills. Other puzzles are helping her work out multiple step problems and help strengthen math skills. Fun summer activity for kids.

This was a gift for my 11 year old great-nephew. He said he was having fun with it. He is pretty advanced in math and science so it is hard to tell if this would be a good thing for an "average" student. A good choice for him though.

Santa brought this for my 2nd grader. She wouldn't put it down. The puzzles are not too easy and some are a bit of a challenge but she is able to figure them out. Perfect for those times when you need your child to play alone, also great for the car. Was surprised that this was one of her favorite presents, but she loves it. Plan to buy more in the series.

Great for children - I thoroughly recommend it.
