my mind conjures simple words like "big, " "expansive

*by C***G on Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2016*

Let me just preface this review with the fact that everything you've heard about these headphones, both the positive and negative, is all true.Yes, these are very powerful headphones. When I listen to my music on these (thus far classical and electronica), my mind conjures simple words like "big," "expansive," and "fun." As somebody else pointed out, the sound stage gets better with higher volume as opposed to distorting. And speaking of volume, you're not going to max it out unless you already have damaged hearing to begin with.Yes, the frequency range is very balanced. Not Sennheiser HD 600 or Audio Technica ATH-M50x neutral, but the frequencies are all evenly there from 16hz to 22khz and *at least* 15khz, which is the top of my hearing range anyway. The claim is that these go to 40khz, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me because the maximum range of human hearing is about 22khz. Were these headphones made for dolphins?Anyway, the separation between the bass, mids and treble is extremely clean. While the bass has the ability to get boomy at times, it never drowns out the higher frequencies. I don't need to use any equalizer presettings or the bass or treble filters that come with these headphones. The headphones are perfect "out of the box."Yes, these are heavy. They're very, very heavy. I would feel safe jogging in a dangerous neighborhood at night because if I'm ever attacked I can swing them at my attacker and probably commit manslaughter in the process. And about the stainless steel, is that design decision wholly necessary? My suspicion is that low-weight plastic would have been perfectly fine, and that the stainless steel was utilized solely to communicate that "These are big heavy sounding headphones with big big sound RARRRHHH!!!"Yes, the cord is very heavy. You know that clip and neck sleeve that you've seen come with other in-ear headphones and which you may have ignored? Yeah, you're gonna need those here. The cable is so heavy that if you don't use them it's going to swing all over the place, slamming violently into your body, objects around the house, small children, etc. You will grow used to the neck sleeve and clipping the wire to your shirt. It will become habit.Yes, the cord is very long. I use a twist tie to bunch it up. Otherwise I can only assume these headphones were intended for giraffes. Giraffes with the frequency-hearing range of dolphins.Yes, that over-the-ear loop is super annoying at first. The good news here is that there's a method for dealing with this. Aim the headphones forward, then bring the loop around your ear and insert the headphones. You will grow acclimated to this action until it's really not a big deal anymore. The other good news is that with this technique, along with the neck sleeve and the clip, the resulting ensemble is a secure and snug fit perfectly adequate for exercise. However, I can't comment on the impact of sweat since I'm not a huge sweater myself. The passive noise isolation is "quite good." The isolation gets promoted to "very quite good" if you use Comply foam eartips. Combined with the music you will not hear any screaming children, construction, oncoming trucks, etc.But still, all of this means that these are not at all what I would call "casual listening" headphones. They're overkill for your regular podcasts (unless you need noise isolation, of course), and if you need to insert and remove them frequently frustration will set in. For casual listening I just use Apple earpods, which aren't amazing and obviously have no noise isolation, but they're totally fine for normal circumstances. The T20i headphones are for when you want to block out the world and enjoy the bloody hell out of your music. If you're a sound head, you will get used to the nuisances surrounding these headphones, and you will like them, because at $250 it's exceedingly unlikely you're going to find a better and bigger sound elsewhere.

Flagship Audiophile sound at a budget price.

I was introduced to the RHA line by the excellent MA750. For $120, it presrented a very enjoyable experience, with a powerful sub bass that added fun and punch to the music without interfering with the rest of the audio spectrum. Solid build and a 3 year warranty added to the excellent package. The T20 is another league however. All new driver technology resides in the molded stainless steel oval shaped earpieces. Three screw on acoustic filters are provided to fine tune the sound to your liking.Using the provided small double flange silicon tips provided me the best seal and the phones are extremely comfortable despite their weight, more comfortable than the 750. Perhaps the larger venting of the dynamic driver provides for a feeling of pressure in the ear canals. These can easily be worn for hours.Out of the box, the phones sounded rather aggressive with a treble bite and a restrained bottom end, rather disappointing actually. I've never been a big believer in burn in, but figured I had nothing to lose, so let them play for a few hours without listening.A dramatic change in sound. The bass became powerful and full and the top end settled in, still providing clarity and sparkle but now with no harshness or sibilance. I had been using the bass filters initially to try to bring out some semblance of bass. I now found the sound very full with an emphasis on mid to mid-upper bass that, while enjoyable, was definitely north of neutral. I decided to again try the reference filter. Perfection. The bass remains powerful and deep. Mid bass and above takes a step back and the bass extension now sounds even deeper, rendering even synthesized low bass with clarity and detail.Mids are just right to my ears. Clarity, layering and detail are all in abundance. Plenty of resolution and separation are there, allowing individual voices and instruments to easily be heard. Very nice on all vocals. The upper end is in line with the mids. Again, with the reference filter, extension really shines. Cymbals and high hats some through with clarity and natural decay. No harshness or sibilance, just sparkle and air. This is probably the biggest improvement over the 750, which could get a little congested and lacked ultimate extension.I did not try the treble filters, as I felt the timbre and balance was nearly perfect to me.Again a three year warranty is provided. The cables are permanently attached, but are thick and sturdy with excellent strain relief. I can't imagine them ever developing a problem. Memory wire, which is quite stiff, is built in to mold the cable around the ears for an over ear fit. The memory effect is very strong and that portion of the wire is very stiff. A little work is required to mold these into perfect fit, but once obtained it will remain that way and make the phones feel almost weightless despite their heft. While the 240 dollar price isn't cheap, the T20 still play well above their price tag. Exquisite sound, comfort, build quality, and warranty combine to make an extremely attractive package. Improvements in sound quality with higher priced phones will be incremental at best, largely a matter of taste, and at a high price with diminishing return on the dollar. Very impressive, I would be very satisfied with these at double the price, although I probably wouldn't invest that much in IEM's. With the quality of sound provided by the T20 at this price, there is no need to.

    Was lange währt

Empfehle sich hier mal "The Time Machine" von Jean Michel Jarre anzuhören. For the RHA guys who might read this - the RHA T20 are great in ears. Their Sound is very rich and crispy. The building quality and the idea with sound tuning filters are amazing. But I had to modify the Sound Settings because the higher mids can be sometimes pretty annoying. I think this higher-mid peak is too much. You don't wanna hear Whitney Houston and some female artists with Standard Settings if you love your ears. ;) But I'm pretty happy with this in ears that gives you a perfect seal and a very spatial and vibrant sound. They work great with smartphones. Highly recommended.
