What should I use to keep it from stinking?

Unfortunately, my dogs have not not used it to go to the bathroom yet. . They just sit on it outside on the porch. I put towels underneath it in case they do use it to urinate or go to the bathroom, to keep the porch dry. My thoughts are that I would spray a hose on it after they used it though if they go to the bathroom on it

Does anything need to be placed underneath it to catch the pee or does it absorb it? Also, how often do these need to be replaced?

Yes, you need something underneath. I made a simple box out of 1x4’s ( stapled & taped a tarp on the bottom) and filled it with pine pellet litter. I scoop out the litter as it breaks down & hose down the grass pad every 1-2 days. Every few weeks I clean the entire box & change the litter. The litter soaks up the pee & keeps the grass from smelling a lot longer than just using a regular training pad under it.
