This is a fantastic book for both amateurs and enthusiasts. Profusely illustrated, it covers many of the plants you are likely to find on Crete. There is an extensive introduction which covers background information including geology, geography and climate, essential to a deeper understanding of Crete's flora. There is a useful chapter on cultivated plants on the island, a list of endemics and several other useful sections. The book is scientifically arranged by family and in most cases there is more than one photo of each species, drawn from John Fielding's vast image library compiled over many years. The photos, taken in different situations together with detailed descriptions of habitat and location, making for easy identification, though at around 3 kilos this is not a book for the field! Although expensive you get a lot of book for your money with 650 pages containing 1900 photographs. This is a solid work which is a pleasure to browse through, excellent for use in identification, and plenty of detailed content makes it worthwhile for deeper study.

The book is filled with more than 600 photo-pages with beautiful photos of all variations of flowers in incredible unbelievable amazing landscapes, and biotopes. I am very enthusiastic about it. I expected flowers, but the overwhelming amount of flowers presented in this book, and the explaining text next to the photos, creates a kind of an excellent documentary on paper, a complete other view on Crete than what the world knows. Mostly you find beaches when googling for photos about Crete. Tourists go for the beaches. Let them stay there, however. Tourists damage, destroy, created dirt and environmental pollution because of their respectless narrow minded behaviour. It would be a disaster if they would ever go there where I want to go because of what I see in this book. This book has been published for those who respect and love nature, who understand the immeasurable treasure of the Cretan nature, its unique wilderness. It should be protected by the World Wide Fund for Nature before it is too late.

This book has lots of photos as well as descriptions. It also covers the whole year, rather than just Spring which most books tend to do. As general locations are given for each plant, it helps you to plan which walks to do when. Far too big to carry with you when walking, but good for ID against any photos you have taken. Worth putting in your luggage if you have a large enough allowance.

Great book - lots of work involved and the result is impeccable. It weighs a lot though and is best as a reference book in the library rather than a field guide.

Für jeden ernsthaften Kreta-Reisenden eine ideale Vorlage zur Vorbereitung und hinterher zur Aufarbeitung. Auf Reisen selbst allerdinge ist es eine gewichtige Angelegenheit, also kein Taschenbuch für Exkursionen. Dazu ist der Umfang einfach zu groß. Aber es ist das umfangreichste Bestimmungewerk seiner Art für die kretische Flora und eine echte Bereicherung.
