As the enterprising traveler well knows, Britain is divided up into separate kingdoms under the heading of the United Kingdom. This new Rick Steves book is your guide to England itself. Few places on earth can offer so much variety in terms of history, culture, and landscape. The guide offers chapters on England, broken out on a geographic basis. The chapters include lots of detailed narrative on what to see and how to get there. The offerings include lots of preserved history, modern culture, and all the hiking, biking, and even boating one could want. The narrative is nicely supported by maps, diagrams and color/black and white photographs. Remember, to get the best benefit of a Rick Steves guide, you really do have to read the whole thing. Then you can go back and focus on what will be most useful to your journey. Highly recommended to the enterprising traveler who is ready for that long-postponed trip to England.

After several trips to England and the purchase of dozens of travel guides to the country, I’ve found this to be the most comprehensive of the bunch. It isn’t all inclusive but it is full of useful, practical information. The author is renowned for his practical approach to travel. He’s so practical, he tells you to just rip out whole sections of his travel guides to save space on your trip as there is always more than you have time to see and space is limited. But dollar for dollar and ounce for ounce this guide has the best overall picture of England you can find. Includes overview, detailed sections in all the major things to see and do as well as good coverage of many lesser known spots. Some minor sites, places are overlooked. (He never mentions Winchester, which an Englishman we know of thinks is an absolute must! The author has to choose some things to leave out!). Also included is a section on most useful travel hints, advice. It’s good advice from one of the most well traveled persons around. Overall, for a comprehensive guide, this is one you want!.
