As seen on MasterClass! The instant #1 New York Times, #1 Wall Street Journal, #1 USA Today bestseller answers the world’s most complex question: How do you lead? Leadership is the most challenging of human endeavors. It is often misunderstood. It can bewilder, mystify, and frustrate even the most dedicated practitioners. Leaders at all levels are often forced to use theoretical guesswork to make decisions and lead their troops. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY. There are principles that can be applied and tenets that can be followed. There are skills that can be learned and maneuvers that can be practiced and executed. There are leadership strategies and tactics that have been tested and proven on the battlefield, in business, and in life. Retired U.S. Navy SEAL officer Jocko Willink delivers his powerful and pragmatic leadership methodology, which teaches how to lead any team in any situation to victory. This new expanded edition contains a protocol to develop and hone critical decision-making instincts and make them habitual. Review: The leading book on leadership? - Over the course of 50+ years of involvement with the military and business, I have rarely read a leadership book so well written as this one. It is among the best of such books, if not the best. With compelling ideas developed from and proven by his own experience as a leader of Navy SEALs, Willink shows how creative applications of honesty, integrity, and the Golden Rule work wonders in demanding environments, particularly the military. His “Laws of Combat” (Cover and Move, Simple, Prioritize, and Decentralized Command; to include Extreme Ownership and Dichotomy of Leadership) are strategic principles that can be applied virtually anywhere. His penetrating insight into complex interpersonal situations leaves one with guidance that is logical, rational, and inspiring. And, perhaps most amazing of all, it is scalable, whether or not one is working with a fire team or an army, or, by extension, a proprietorship or a business empire. I highly recommend this book as a must-have for any serious library on leadership! Of possible interest: Strategic Advantage: How to Win in War, Business, and Life Review: Great book for the new manager - As an Army veteran transitioning into a managerial role in a technology company, I found "Leadership Strategy and Tactics: Field Manual" to be an invaluable resource that seamlessly bridged my military experience with the challenges of civilian leadership. Jocko Willink's practical insights and straightforward approach to leadership resonated deeply with me. The book is structured in a concise and actionable format, providing clear strategies and tactics that can be implemented immediately. Willink's emphasis on taking ownership, developing effective communication skills, and fostering a culture of discipline and accountability are principles that seamlessly translate from the battlefield to the corporate world. What sets this book apart is its emphasis on leadership scenarios and real-life examples. Each chapter explores different leadership challenges and offers practical solutions derived from real-world experiences. Great Leadership Training Conducive for Building Successful Teamwork, Productivity, & Morale! Enjoy!
During my 22.5 years of service in the United States Marine Corps, I had ample opportunity to lead Marines both as an enlisted man and as an officer. Through regular leadership training during my military career, I learned the information presented by Jocko Willink in his “Leadership, Strategy and Tactics Field Manual.” Having retired from the Marines 30 years ago, I found this book refreshing. The concepts brought back memories of success and failure that I experienced as both a subordinate and as a leader. I am retired now, but I remember using these strategies after my military service as I rose through the ranks of a National Service Organization, as I grew my personal business organization, and during another career with a state government. When my son was young I remember trying to teach him many of these leadership strategies. I remember telling him that a good leader gives the credit to the team’s success, but takes responsibility when things don’t go well. Successful leaders praise people publicly and reprimand them privately. Successful leaders listen to and train subordinates while encouraging others to resolve problems at the lowest level. These concepts and many others are taught to Marines during their ongoing leadership training. Recently my son discovered Jocko Willink and was excited to introduce me to the author’s bestseller “Extreme Ownership” as well as this field manual. I am proud that my son is using these leadership strategies and tactics in his career and has had an impact on the success of his team’s performance and morale. Throughout my adult life, I have seen people and all levels struggle at work because they have never received training and do not know how to lead others or understand how to build teamwork and morale. Clashing ego’s and lack of understanding of leadership concepts hurt productivity, morale, teamwork, and success in businesses. I recommend this book to family, friends, and others. I think it should be required reading beginning in high school. The leadership skill training provided by Jocko Willink will help people understand and get along with others. Practicing these skills will help people to be better parents, teachers, students, employees, bosses, and more. Enjoy!

More Great Leadership Advice
I'll be honest, what Jocko says about leadership all rings true with my own personal experience. And I love the way he says it: down-to-earth, no-nonsense, practical advice that is applicable in nearly every aspect of life. If you've read "Extreme Ownership" or "The Dichotomy of Leadership" then you already have a good idea of what to expect in this book (and if you haven't read either of those, then I strongly encourage you to do so!). What is different about this book is its tone. This book feels more personal, and the advice feels more prescriptive. It's as if you're having a one-on-one conversation, and he's sharing all of the different techniques and tricks he used, and every different situation he used them in, throughout his career. In that sense, this book feels more like a catalog of ideas for people to browse and choose from.

Simple Meets Vital
Unlike other leadership books that focus on a person's own career, with tips and advice about leadership sprinkled throughout, this book focuses on the MISSION and the TEAM. It is about being the best leader so that you accomplish the goals and missions set forth for your company, business, command, etc. Coming from the Naval Academy, I was exposed to numerous leadership books, documents, and experiences that shaped me on an individual level as a person, and as a leader. However, I wish this book was published sooner as there is no greater all-in-one source of leadership and how it is done, then what is written in this field manual. Truly it is one of a kind in that his experiences as a leader do not necessarily dictate his view of leadership, much of what is given comes from his reflection of when he was a follower and took note of the good, great, and bad leaders. It is a powerfully simple, yet vital book for every level of personnel as they learn to grow into a leader, and for the higher-ups, as they continue to hone in and continually better themselves as leaders. I would recommend this book for anyone, anywhere. Military, business, first responder, entrepreneur, stay at home parents, students, coaches, and athletes. This book is a unique and necessary part of learning the ways of the leader not for personal gain, but for the team and the mission.

Good book for managers coming through the ranks
As someone who founded a company and hired on staff years later, I did not find this book related to my personal experience and needs as much as Extreme Ownership or the Dichotomy of Leadership. However, I do find this is a great book for my mid-level and junior staff who were brought into leadership and management positions through the ranks. There is solid advice in this easy to read manual for rank-and-file line workers who can lead within their existing roles, and for those being put in management positions.

Thorough Leadership Manual with Detailed Stories and Brief Theory
Background: Avid listener of Jocko Podcast and Owner of Extreme Ownership and Dichotomy of Leadership and on page 216 of 300 of this book. Leadership Strategy and Tactics streamlines Jocko's format even further than Extreme Ownership and Dichotomy of Leadership in favor of breath. The 300 pages with a 6 page index--with pages to jump to for dealing with analysis paralysis to yes-men--continues Jocko's style of Owning the consequences of the actions of your team while still being level-headed and encouraging others to take initiative. I recommend this book for readers of Jocko and for those who want an overview of his way of leadership. When your name is on the door, everything that goes on is your fault--but that means you have the opportunity to learn how to make as much go right as you become capable of making it. A word of warning for those who, like me, think by reading it you can practice it--you can't unless you build a foundation to deal with stress. Be Aware of the stressers--name them, set yourself up to deal with them, Rest properly to recharge to deal with them, get Support by making true friends and spending time with them, Exercise hard and regularly, ebuild your body with proper Nutrition, develop a resilient and anti-fragile Attitude like Jocko's "Good" (page 207 of this book), and develop a habit of Learning things you truly care about to keep a joy for things of life and a hope that you can learn to resolve the problems you face.
