Earthsea: The First Four Books (A Puffin Book) : Le Guin, Ursula: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: WHO IS THE GREATEST? - Who is the greatest high fantasy writer? Tolkien or Le Guin? For me the matter as she writes in a way that is always relevant, always powerful. I doubt whether anybody will ever be able to achieve this level again, but let's see. BTW not a children's book a book for those who have ears to hear and eyes to see. Review: Great read - I've read it before, several times. It always repays reading again as you see fresh things. I love her writings, they are inspiring. After reading this I also re-read the two following volumes. So satisfying.

Earthsea- A Harry Potter forerunner?
This volume of a 4 in 1 book was bought as a gift for my Grandson. It was a recommendation as a forerunner of the Harry Potter series and as he loved the first three in that series and has yet to read the last ones, I thought this may keep him going! But until Christmas parcels are yet to be wrapped I may indulge myself in reading this before it first!

Read this wonderful book as a teenager and always wanted it. A bit bulky but very good value.

Wonderful stories, told beautifully by an unfussy writer
Wonderful stories, told beautifully by an unfussy writer. If you love fantasy but want characters who aren't too melodramatic read these classic tales.

I love these books, they are smart, wise and compelling. Reading them I realised how much the author influenced later fantasy writers. I'm not even a huge fantasy fan but these books are beautifully written and the main characters so unique and unusual. I didn't come to these books to learn more about myself and the would yet here we are.

These books actually helped me grow up. They are written in such an amazing, magical style. I love Ursula K LeGuin’s approach to problem solving throughout the series; she’s an unparalleled author, truly first rate. These are some of her finest stories.

The format of the book is much too small, resulting in 800 pages, which are uncomfortable to hold. There are no illustrations other than the decidedly uninspiring cover (plainwrap blue would have been better that that silly painting). The text design on the cover is inept (especially on the back), but the contents of the books have been adequately reset, with only a few typesetting mistakes, and only one or two really significant errors. The worst decision the editors made was to destroy the impact of the ending by appending a dozen pages of utterly unnecessary and poorly composed "Extra" information at the end of the volume. Anyone who is considering offering this edition to someone who has not read Earthsea before would be well-advised to remove those six leaves with a razor blade. At 12€ this edition was an adequate deal, but I would have been very disappointed to pay 16€ (or more) for it.
