Jake and the Never Land Pirates: The Croc Takes the Cake (World of Reading) Paperback – Picture Book, July 10, 2012

My 3 1/2 year old daughter and 18 month old son love Jake and the Neverland Pirates. This book is very much loved by my daughter. The pictures look just like the cartoon. It has short, easy wording. It uses mini pictures of the characters and key words so children can begin to recognize words. This will be a great book to use while my daughter is learning to read next year. the storyline is also funny. It's Captain Hook's birthday and he wants a cake. Cubby makes him one but Tick Tock Crock almost gets it- and in the end Hook gets his cake and eats it too!

For a first reader, I was surprised that so many of the words within a sentence were pictures, like an characters face rather than their name. I haven't run across this before and can't see how it helps learning words. We haven't bought many first reader books, these were for an Easter basket, but have checked out several from the library and had not seen the pictures in those books.

I bought this for my three year old nephew as part of a Christmas gift. He loves everything Jake and the Never land Pirates, so naturally he loved this. He was so excited when he opened it, that he wanted to have rest time and read his new books right away! I really liked that it's a beginners book. It's very simple to read, with pictures in place of some words, with the corresponding word printed beneath each picture. When he starts learning how to read, this will be a go to book for him.

The level and description on these books are misleading. I was looking for a very simple books to introduce my 4-year old to reading. Expected something of a 2-3 words per page that he could read by himself. But these are actual short stories, designed for parent to read to their children. My son loves the stories and characters, but it is not what I expected.

I was looking for a Pre-1 level reader for my 4+ year old grandson whose reading skills are just emerging. As a former K-1 teacher I knew I wanted a book with limited, repetitious vocabulary. This is not that book! There are numerous words which would be difficult for even a level 1 reader (whoa, Cap'n, steady, puny) and easier words have pictorial hints (cake, Hook). I was a bit hesitant to buy a Disney book but my grandson is very familiar with the story of Peter Pan so I thought he'd enjoy it. I think I'll stick with Scholastic readers. They know what they're doing!

Our girls received this book for Christmas, along with the pirate Bucky ship. They love the story. They are also learning to tell the story themselves thru all the great pictures added to the sentences. This is a great learning tool to teach early reading as well. I love this book and others designed this way. I would definately recommend this to anyone.

i am a big fan of amazon so i started looking for things,mainly the pirate ship. my grandson loves the cartoon.after i read it to him once now he reads it to me. LOVE the pictures.We will be getting the pirate ship for Christmas.....

One should always encourage reading with Step into Read series. Your Jake the Pirate fan will expand his imagination and play while getting interested in words in print. Disney has another winning series.

My 5 year old is just learning to read and I thought this would be a book with short simple words she could read to me. I might have misread the description but it is a story book with pictures in the middle of the sentences so you read it to them then they say the word for the picture (ie, cake, Captain Hook, etc). My daughter likes doing that anyway and this is about Captain Hook and his birthday cake so makes a nice birthday present for someone. Short story, good quality book. I liked it.

Over the moon with this book. My two year old son loves Jake and the Neverland pirates so this will be a great Christmas present. I love the fact that there are pictures of the characters and other items in place of words so kids can fill in parts of the story making learning to read all the more enjoyable.
