Excellent mid-size soil loosener/rock puller/manythings doer pick. Tough as nails.
Excellent/oddball size ideal for "little" swings and scooping, very versitile, WELL MADE, moves rocks with ease, lever, I mean this thing is pretty gnarly. Its midevil dang near, and feels it. Very good weight distribution, feels like you got a robot appendage almost, nice hammered finish, works great in hard or soft soils, perfect rock finder, doesn't beat the tip...just does what its supposed to, no excuses. If I were a foot taller I'd buy another and use 2.

High quality pick
This thing is very high quality and worked great for getting through basalt and hard packed clay. Pulled rocks real well. It was very sharp out of the box. Well worth the price.

Not 36 Inches
I just received this pick and I was surprised to find that it was much smaller than I expected. The product dimensions are listed at (as of this review) 36" by 18" by 3", and one of the reviewers claimed that they could use it as a walking stick?! The actual dimensions are 26" by 13.5" by 2.25" (the box was smaller than said dimensions as well). Having noted that point, I think I'm going to really like this pick. I'll update this review once I've had a chance to use it in the field--hopefully my rating will go up to a 5 star. My impressions are that it is well constructed and seems like just about the perfect size for close-quarters digging. If you're going to dig a big hole in flat ground, then this pick is a little too short. If you're digging into a wall or will be digging while kneeling, this should be perfect. Update (5-15-2014) After spending a weekend rockhounding with this, I love it (thus an increase to 5 stars). If I was only able to bring a single tool for any rockhounding trip, this would be it. Here are some notes: -It can completely replace a standard pick except in the case where you are digging in a smaller hole--the head of this pick is pretty long, so it can be difficult to maneuver it in a tighter place. -It is very effective as a pry bar. I noticed zero flex when applying some pretty heavy loading. -It holds its edge well. After taking a serious pounding this weekend, the tip is definitely duller than when I started, but it could be much worse. -The shovel is incredibly convenient -The handle is very tough. So far there's no damage to the handle--I think it might actually hold up in the long run.

Only Way to Geo Dig!
LOVE this Estwing Geo/Paleo pick! I only had my Estwing Rock Pick Hammer & a very small flower bed shovel. Lol A guy from the rock club I belong too, took me on a "dig," with lots of rock & dirt to dig & sort through to find our treasures. I was chipping my way & flipping dirt with my pick & tiny shovel.... He wanted to take a break & told me to use his Estwing Geo/Paleo Pick. I WAS IMMEDIATELY SOLD & HAD to buy one! This is really the way to go! It's all he ever uses along with a normal shovel to move large amounts of material loosened with the pick. This pick quickly loosens & breaks material up, with it's pointed tip on 1 side & it's wider blade on the other. LOVE IT! Well worth the extra $$, & WILL last you a LIFETIME. It's well made & made in the U.S.A. by a long time, well known, quality dependable company. Downside is it's larger & a bit heavier to carry when hiking in, but, you can always bind it to a backpack & GO!

Handle is hollow!!!
Very nice little rock pick. Seems well built except the handle is hollow. I expected it to be solid like other estwing products. Its a bit of a let down because I know it's the weakest point where it will break.thr grip seems nice with the rubber handle. I planned on using this for digging in rocks but with the hollow handle I can't see it lasting that long. For the price and estwing name on it I expected better. 😔

Best Pickaxe for Rockhounds
I bought my first one eight years ago and just bought one for my fiance. These things are magical!! They literally coax the ore right out of the ground!! Beware sunstones and petrified wood and moss agates and limcasts and Holly Blue, we're coming for you!!

Could use a little improvement.
I'm writing this review on my second PaleoPick. Here is what I've found: The rubber handle-sleeve will twist and work it's way off of the tubular metal handle...some gel-style super-glue fixed this issue for at least one fossil-excavation season. The coating on the tubular metal handle is thin and will flake off with use. This leaves it unprotected and able to rust. That being said, I'm digging through cretaceous sand deposits, the tip continues to self-sharpen to a weapon-like point. The tool is decently light, very effective in some soils and I'll always keep one handy. True Story: I earned my first PaleoPick by modeling with it for Estwing. There, I said it. It's on the internet forever.

First impression - no mistake. I haven't had it in the field yet.

Necesitaba un pico manejable pero duro de pelar, y esta herramienta me va a servir mucho más que la picoleta que usaba para cavar en la roca

Very effective short pick. Have used in hard rock filled ground and it was ideal. The short handle makes it ideal for underground use, although the price makes it a little extravagant. High quality estwing one piece steel design though means it is going to brake or come apart and is very strong, anti vibration handle works very well and the comfort grip feel good all of which helps to justify the price point.
