Raw, Personal and Surprising
Chely Wright's autobiography comes across as something deeply personal, of which the writing was taken seriously- unlike so many other autobiographies out there today. It's full of raw emotion and unlikely revelations; Chely doesn't make excuses for past mistakes, nor does she condemn other's for theirs. This book honestly surprised me, and affected me in a way that I did not expect. I would highly reccomend it!

Painful and Thought-Provoking
This is a quite exceptional book. I think it's fairly well-known now that Chely Wright, a successful country artist, came out a few years ago and has been dealing with the fall-out ever since. This is the painfully honest description of her life and how she came to this point. The opening is simply one of the most dramatic true-life moments I've ever read - Chely standing in front of a mirror with a gun in her mouth. It's shocking, yes, but it tells you where the book is going. From there, we regress to Chely's childhood and follow her through her life and career. It's not always chronological, but there is always a point to everything - not a single word is wasted. If you want a straight-forward story of Chely's musical career, this isn't the book for you - some of the recordings barely warrant a mention, but her career is the foundation of everything that takes place. And she pulls no punches. I can't remember the last time I read an autobiography that laid the author so bare, especially since Chely freely admits that she treated some very nice people very badly. What makes this even better, is that it actually made me think about my own perspectives on life. The new afterword, an interview with Chely, has a great paragraph about her meetings with business people and how she has made them think about their own lives and struggles - and that really struck a chord. That people who have worked with her in the past have effectively turned their back on her is shameful but more power and respect to Chely for standing firm.A great, great book. Read it.

Just Like Me
I don't think there has ever been a book I have wanted to read as much as this one! As soon as I read the prologue, I knew that I was in for an emotional read. I was gripped from start to finish. I have been a fan of Chely's music for years but never really knew much about her life story. Her recent coming out surprised me simply because I never expected it but when you read this book, you soon understand why this was the case. Chely tells her story in an incredibly open, honest and moving way. You feel as if you are getting to know a new friend because it is so honest. By the time you reach the end of the book, you feel as if you have been on a journey with her - through the laughter and the tears. The opening of the book is heartbreaking to read but by the end of it, you feel incredibly proud and optimistic for her. If I could say something to Chely now that I've read her book, it would quite simply be 'thank you'. I'm sure this was not an easy step for her to take but people 'Like Me' can take confort and inspiration from her story. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

girl luv
Author's story, occasionally disjointed. She had affection for her third-grade teacher and kisses the photo of her pretty cousin in 4th grade. She has boyfriends whom she just kisses. She goes to Branson, Mo to get famous and has relationships with women. each worse than the previous. B/W photos. Insightful.
