A hard rock classic, Montrose delivers high-energy riffs and powerful vocals. With tracks like "Rock Candy" and "Bad Motor Scooter," this debut album set the stage for future heavy rock acts. Review: Good album for rock music collectors - Excellent album as many music fans can attest to the product lived up to the hype about it

Very good product
I have been meaning to add this to my CD collection for years and am glad that I finally did. Not a bad song on it.

Surely one of the greatest debuts in history?
If you like your rock delivered with verve, swagger and an impish grin while retaining the beautiful crunch and simplicity which is one of the forms strong points then you will grinning from ear to ear once you slap this into your stereo. Indeed it is hard to praise this album enough in many ways. Firstly the crunchy, raunchy, slithering (whatever is required) guitart playing of Ronnie Montrose is mature, carefully constructed and connective and if this guy didn't have a big influence on one Eddie Van Halen I'll eat my hat. Secondly the vocals of Sammy Hagar are excellent. They are delivered with the sort of swagger necessary to encapsulate in the mind of the listener the idea of the rock god but with enough connective nuances so the listener feels like they too are invited to the party. Blessed with open production that feels warm and traditional it's pretty much impossible to pick out highlights as darn near every song is a highlight. And beyond that the album as a whole stacks up very well in terms of pacing and addressing a variety of rock song, the entire band showing themselves to have a broad range. We have guilty pleasure teen-dream rockers like Rock The Nation and Bad Motor Scooter (the latter replete with cheeky lyrics) through to songs with trace elements of funk such as Good Rockin' Tonight and the fun time blast that is One Thing On My Mind. I mean, seriously, any man who listens to that number and doesn't smirk while at the same time reaching for his phone to call up his girlfriend might as well book himself a spot at the morgue - cos brother you're dead! Within a single album - and only eight tracks long so the listener never gets fatigued - it's hard to do it all but honestly it's hard to think of a rock album that approaches the level of brilliances if this style of 70's hard rock is in any way your bag (to quote Austin Powers). In fact I'd put it on the same level as Robert Plants first two solo albums as being the sort of connective albums that are utterly mood changing and comprise complete listening experiences. So stop reading reviews and put this in your cart.

Not a perfect album, but damn close!
Of course I knew what this was before I both purchased it. I thought I had a copy on vinyl and when I discovered that I no longer did I had to replace it because of course this album is a classic to rock fans! It could stand to be remastered for a new generation however. It suffers from '70s technology. Rock Candy definitely the hardest rocking song on the album.

Was soll man sagen?

I first heard Ronnie Montrose back in the early seventies on The Edgar Winter Band Album "They Only Come Out At Night" and thought his playing was really good. He was equally at home playing a variety styles; from out and out pop like "Alta Mira" to the more rockier stuff like "Frankenstein". But when the band appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test he had been replaced by another talented guitarist Rick Derringer (from Edgar's brother Johnny's band). However, not long after that Ronnie also appeared on the OGWT with his own band simply called Montrose. It was for me a highly memorable edition of the show. They played "Bad Motor Scooter" and I was totally blown away. The sound was nothing short of awesome. Ronnie played a highly modified silver looking guitar (well it looked silver on our black and white telly!) and during "Space Station No 5" was making the most incredible sounds. The band was so tight and the energy electrifying. I just had to find the LP and eventually tracked it down in the old Virgin store near the Bear Pit in Bristol and it didn't disappoint. It is still among my favorite albums of all time and is probably the best American Hard Rock Album ever made. The sound this band created was years ahead of its time and still sounds fresh and contemporary today. Every track is an absolute gem. The bands playing and Ted Templemans production created a powerhouse of sound that has rarely been equalled. It is such a dynamic record. Ronnie's very distinctive riffing and solo work is breathtaking, the rhythm section drive everything along perfectly (terrific drum sound) and Sammy Hagar belts out the vocals in great style. Its a genuinely thrilling collection of rock that still excites me to this day. For many years I would play the LP and people would say "Wow! who is that?" they had never heard of the band or Ronnie Montrose...unfortunately the band never really made it as big as they should have, though Sammy Hagar later had a successful solo career and an excellent spell with Van Halen (and still performed Space Station No.5 from this album). Montrose subsequent releases never quite hit the form they achieved here ("Paper Money" is worth checking out though) and they eventually became one of rocks great lost bands. But buy this record and listen to a genuine rock classic...its influence is still felt to this day.You wont be disappointed. Note: Beware of early non remastered versions of this CD - the sound is abysmal. Totally flat and lifeless transfer from the original analogue tapes. Make sure you buy the remastered CD.... or even better an original Vinyl LP!!!

A bon entendeur salut...
