Yes, there is an opening in the back, the fabric overlaps and it is not completely sewn across. So the cover can be taken off (though with some difficulty since the foam is bulky).

Is this machine or hand washable?

Due to the foam, we do not recommend washing; rather, you can spot clean with a damp cloth. If it must be washed, the cover is removable so you can wash without the foam, but even then we recommend hand washing due to the tassels (they are delicate and may get damaged in the washer). You can try washing in a machine on gentle cycle cold, but hand wash is best for longevity. Do NOT dry in a machine.
