Students of "hands on" theater will enjoy this book. There are many ways of making masks that are presented. They range from the newer materials and processes to the old ways (leather masks). What you learn from this well experienced and respected author (who has other related books) is the individual craftsmanship that "theater" still takes whether you need to make masks or props or other needed molded things as in product feasibility demonstrations. Take away the general procedures of the "craft" and apply them to your special needs whether in theater, product research and development in many other industries or in home hobbies.

For anyone considering making masks out of leather (which is where we were coming from) this book spells it all out for you. It also includes things that you WON'T find on-line on YouTube, so don't assume that you can just go the easy route. However, it probably isn't necessary to get the latest, updated version, I couldn't see any additions that made any difference from the earliest edition to the newest edition.

I'm not aware of anything else quite like this for making leather commedia dell'arte style masks and half-masks. It is very much geared to "how to know-how" rather than armchair appreciation.Easy to read, well-organized, and plenty of clear pictures.

I was looking for a book on making leather masks, and this book gave me more than I was looking for. It also covers history of leather masks, which I found to be most interesting.
