Fragments (Penguin Classics) (English and Greek Edition)

My “at hand” book
This book has all the surviving fragments of Heraclitus’ teachings. The foreword and introduction give context and background to the fragments that are applicable in his time and now. The translation of the fragments is simple and straightforward and convey the meaning clearly. The fragments are practical, realistic, and timeless. This is one of the books I keep at hand, like March Aurelius’ Meditations and Epictetus’ works. I usually read a few at a time, reflect on the principle, values, and meaning of each, and then apply in the real world.

Fantastic read!
The words of Heraclitus ring louder and clearer today and this translation transcends to show its relevance. Must read for layman and scholar.

Judgement of Fragments
It was refreshing a point of view gained from this book. It was short but to the point. A great read for anyone interested in philosophy.

A classic of unplumbable depth.
Change is so constant that even change can’t help but change. And while change occurs in front of the observer, the observer also changes.

Translation is stunningly free, but a fine edition for the reader of Ancient Greek
It is nice having a Greek text available for the reader of Ancient Greek, but the facing translation goes way beyond the freedom of a "free" translation. It is highly improvisational, with minimal correlation with the Greek text, allowing for the stipulation that translation is always interpretation. But its extreme latitude does a disservice to the non Greek reader, who will likely prefer something closer to the original. As a matter of the general tone of the translation Heraclitus was not a New Age Buddhist; he was Ancient Greek and should be translated accordingly.
