Having spent most of one Sunday working through this book, my ten year old, somewhat of a scratch fan, pronounced this book a five star item. Her reasoning was that it walked her through something new on Scratch in a way she could understand. She was able to use the instructions to create her own character and add movement and sound. She liked the fact that there were loads of good tips, like using audacity to record sound and import into scratch, and to storyboard before you start. Excellent book for the audience it is aimed at - ks2 and 3 children with some prior knowledge but wanting to try something new.

books are lost on kids these days. What I mean is that if they want to learn something they either do an oline tutorial or watch a walkthrough on youtube. However this books has proven to me and a bunch of ks2 pupils, that it can be handy to have a book to (well hand!) while also looking at a screen. Sometimes its just easier. I would think adults would get more out of following the book completly than children, who have a knack with finding the way and just need hints and tips. Very good.

Our son started using Scratch towards the end of Year 3, so when we saw this book we thought it might be useful both for him to improve his skills and for us to gain the first idea of what they were teaching in school IT these days. His school seem to have moved on to other curriculum items now, but son did demonstrate his use of Scratch to create simple animations before moving on to other topics. It's a useful book for us as parents, but hasn't inspired interest in programming for either generation as yet.
