Product Description
Perhaps you remember these guys from the early 80's. Or you may remember them from Slayers' punk cover full length in which they covered five Verbal Abuse songs. Either way this was the first full length done by Verbal Abuse. Its a total hardcore master piece right from the early 80's. Speed, anger frustration and rage all made this full length what it is. After many years of this being out of print Beer City has once again made it available to the masses. Not only does this CD contain the original 'Just an American band ' full length but it also contains a set live from a show that they opened for The Ramones! In this live set are a few songs that have never before been recorded by Verbal Abuse. Not to forget all the power and adrenaline you get to experience from a live show.
Review
Beer City has done the punk community a service by releasing Verbal Abuse's seminal 'Just An American Band' album. -- SOS / Throat CultureDive headlong into some of the best, most underrated and least heard punk rock the San Francisco scene ever produced. -- Gary Vermin / horrorwoodbabbleon.comEven now after all these years , they still manage to blow every other band out of the water. -- Fug / FUG MagazineThis reissue is 100% essential. -- Daniel / Deep Fried BonanzaThis whole album kicks ass! This was how hardcore was played back in the day and will never be duplicated. -- Read Betweeen the Lies

From the Artist
When Beer City asked me if they could re-press the Verbal Abuse LP , I had to say yes. At least now this is an authorized release. The release by BitzCore is a bootleg. They never asked us to this day, have never even given us a copy of the record , much less paid us. Theives plain and simple. The Live set is from our 84 tour. On that tour we played with Poison Idea , Die Krezen, Decry , Slayer, Dead Kennedy's , SNFU, Murphy's Law, Cro Mags, Reagan Youth, Agnostic Front, and the Ramones just to name a few. This show was December of 84 at The Ritz in NY with The Ramones. The Ramones did'nt like us and we could care less. Enjoy, Nicki Sicki
About the Artist
Little did we know it at the time we recorded this album in 1983 , this was to be a journey and a time capsule lasting 18 years and beyond. Verbal Abuse went through many changes but this was the beginning and essence of four punks from Texas. We grew up playing with MDC ( when they were The Stains), The Dicks, The Big Boys, and long before D.R.I. knew how to play instruments. The band moved to SF in 1981, lived in The Vats and survived on Soup Kitchens, Top Ramen and Macaroni-n-cheese, eventually getting a contract with Fowl Records to record this album.

Excellent... Punk Classic...
If you like classic hardcore punk from the 80s recorded inside a trash can like me this if for you...If you want well polished mixed songs (remasters) with a corporative production and no ideals go buy a Blink 182 a Green Day or an Offspring record...

Below Average Early 80's Hardcore
Verbal Abuse was somewhat popular in the early 80's hardcore punk scene, but they were less than mediocre as compared with their peers of the time. They play in the "Nard-Core" style, sounding similar to most bands released by Mystic Records (Ill Repute, Batallion of Saints, Dr. Know, etc.). Originally released in 1983, the production by today's standards is poor. The studio tracks sound flat and whiney, while the live ones are a little punchier, but easily annoy with instruments and vocals randomly cutting in and out. To make things worse, it sounds like Beer City simply burned this straight off the vinyl.

Slayer did it better
I got his CD because Slayer had covered so many of their songs on "Undisputed Attitude". I must say that Slayer did the songs way better than Verbal Abuse. I guess that's why they are the kings!

Classic
The first 12 songs on here constitute the original release. I've not heard the other songs as I have this on LP. My review is based on those 12 songs. There are many albums that probably embody "quintessential early 80s hardcore". This is one of those. Every song on the original release is a classic. A couple of these are Sick Pleasure songs and it's funny...when Nicki went on to play with Afterbirth, I saw some of these songs live with them. Raw frickin' energy and power here, folks. Step right up!

essential hardcore punk
Dude, what's up with people writing bad reviews about the sound quality and the songs not being as good as when Slayer covered them? First off, the recording quality is great and remastering was done well. Its punk rock, it wasn't recorded for a bunch of money by music biz types. Second, this is early 80s punk. Slayer covered half the album has a tribute to that genre cuz without their punk influenced they'd be abunch of cornballs with guyliner pretending to worsphip Satan. Just listen to everything before Reign In Blood! That aside, Verbal Abuse was a punk band from Texas featuring the old vocalist of Sick Pleasure. They played thrashy and sounded a lot like Sick Pleasure. Like MDC and DRI they played extremely fast and with a slight metal influence. Also like MDC and DRI they moved to San Fransico to record their album and stay at the Vats (an infamous house that some cool bands practiced at). They began playing crossover thrash before a lot of punk rockers were cool with heavy metal. Eventually that sound caught on and dominates hardcore punk to this day. This is their only good album, the other ones only really share the band name. If you like Circle Jerks, JFA, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, DRI, and stuff like that you'll definetly like this. I love hardcore punk and this is one of the essential albums of that genre. The other half of the cd is a live concert of them opening up for the Ramones, which is great cuz it shows some of their great material that was never put in the studio. Verbal Abuse rules!!! Although, I like Slayer I wouldn't recomend this to most Slayer fans. Its not metal. Metal blows. This isn't polished studio crap with extended solos. Its raw and juveniele. Just remember, no punk rock means no Reign In Blood.

Nice for historical purposes.
Just an American Band. *** 1/2.Ah, brutal early 1980s punk. The memories come flooding back. Being more of a mid to late 1980s child I missed on these guys. Slayer's Undisputed Attitude CD introduced me to them. I'm glad I bought this.In typical punk fashion of that era, as the previous reviewer states the recording is crap. Beer City while all appropiate cheers for rereleasing this effort. Jeers on the fact that sure as hell sounds like it is from vinyl - remaster or no remaster. Couldn't get access to the source tapes?Irregardless, its a minor annoyance. This album is comprised of the studio LP and a live show. I'll admit I like the live stuff better. Mix is better and you get to hear the band stretch a bit. Studio mix is harsh and midrangy. The instruments don't pop out at me all. Details aren't there. Its just a schmorgasborg of noise. I'm not expecting Rick Rubin level stuff - but I thought it would be better. The material is fun. I can see where these guys could make an impression live.Thats what to get this disc for, the studio stuff is just a bonus.
