I put two in a bedroom because the TV was rather loud and surprisingly it really has cut out the sound in the room with a shared wall. I placed two on the wall that adjoins the other room and they are opposite the TV. I was skeptical but they do seem to be doing some good, plus they look nice on the wall.

Can you use adhesive command strips to hold them up?

For safety reasons, we do not recommend command strips for mounting our acoustic panels.

Could I screw a couple of L-braces into and make it a free-standing panel?

I think that you can do that pretty easily. The frame and the back are pretty stout and will easily, and securely, take screws. I used the standard Z brackets to mount it to my wall and mine have been relocated several times with no issues.
