Excellent guidebook
This 600-page guidebook is the best source of information when traveling to Kenya.

Outdated
The Rough Guide was always the undisputed best guide to Kenya. It's a pity that author Richard Trillo left after the 11th edition in 2016. With this 12th edition (2024), the publisher is now trying to bring the 600-page opus up to date with inexpensive desk research. Of course, not much needs to be changed when it comes to history excursions or park descriptions. But if, eight years and a coronavirus pandemic later, you take over entire hotel lists and excursion destinations without making any corrections, that can't work. Random sample Nairobi: not a word about the expressway, which is now brutally cutting up the city and has eaten up a large part of Uhuru Park (whose complete redesign also goes unnoticed) - but you can still dine in the long-closed Lord Errol. Random sample Turkana: the highly praised Naiwoitorong Guesthouse in Lodwar has become a shadow of its former self, while The Cradle remains unnoticed as a recommendable new addition; Lobolo Camp on the western shore has since sunk into the lake floods, as have parts of the Elmolo settlement on the eastern shore, where the Oasis Lodge has long since lost its German management. Random sample coast: The trendy upswing of Kilifi does not take place, Plantation and Baobab Festival as new attractions remain completely unmentioned ... this is how it goes throughout the entire book. With this in hand, you would try in vain to obtain the abolished eVisa when entering the country, and if you want to buy the supposedly necessary safari card to visit the national parks, you will also be surprised: this is only possible with the help of the eCitizen payment platform (of whose existence you unfortunately also learn nothing). Admittedly: this Rough Guide is still far better than the new Lonely Planet - but it falls completely short of its potential. What a pity - and sorry, Richard...
