Beautiful shirt but after the first wash it shrank so it no longer fits my son.

I bought an XL size. All the rest of the clothes I wear are XL or XXL size. How is it possible that this shirt is too small for me? It's very, very short, the shirt is too small for me. The only explanation I find is that the size is actually L and the label is wrong, because the label says XL
