C++ from the Ground Up, Third Edition

This book is no lightweight measuring 23.5cm by 19cm and 3.5cm thick and comprises just over 600 pages. It weighs just over 1 kilogram. It’s a bit long in the tooth now but I found it valuable because of its lucid style. The text includes literally hundreds of examples of code and uses typefaces professionally to distinguish between explanation, code and keywords. The cover says all the code is ‘free on line’ . This may have been true when the book was published but I have not been able to find it now. In any case, you don’t learn much from code that you haven’t entered manually, so that’s not a problem. The index is VERY good if you need to refresh a particular topic. The book assumes that you already have a computer with a working Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Although C++ has moved on, this is still an excellent introduction to the language.

I studied C language a long time ago, and now I have to work in my PhD with the C++ language, but I forgot all things I learned of C. My supervisor advised me this book to learn this language as well as I go to a uni course. And it's true! Until now it seems very good, it starts to the ground and go on with a lot of examples and you can also avoid to rewrite all of these, because are all downloadable by the website.It's a very good book to start using C++!

This book is very comprehensive and well-structured. Some parts I'm glad my teacher explained further, since I'm a beginner, but you'll get a lot of knowledge from this book! Because the explanations starts from the foundation you sometimes need to read on to get to the Best Practice.

For budding nerds who get better at it and then find all out of date so start again.

It's a good starting point for every developer who want to learn C++; The main topics are clearly exposed, I'm fully satisfied with this purchase

I brought a (probably) first edition of this book. I had already working with BASIC, COBOL and C code for some time, and needed to learn C++ for my job. Perhaps more importantly I needed to understand Object-Orientation. I read this book through, carefully, cover to cover, and it was spot on, covering all of the concepts logically and in enough detail, such that by the end of the book, I knew more than enough of C++ and OO to work confidently and productively.In summary, it's a very good book, but you will have to apply yourself.

A good book to begin with. Easy to read with short code samples to demonstrate concepts, well structured and understandable. A gentle introduction. If the edition I read had not completely neglected initialisation lists, which should certainly be included in a beginner-to-intermediate book, I would have given it 5 stars. Also it does not go deep inside virtual functions, but this is reasonable for the level it addresses.
