Mission in the Twenty-First Century: Exploring the Five Marks of Global Mission Paperback – May 1, 2008

"Mission in the 21st Century" is a collection of essays by scholars in the area of global missions edited by Andrew Walls and Cathy Ross. The subtitle of the book is "Exploring the Five Marks of Global Mission." Two essays are devoted to each of the five marks, which are: To proclaim the good news of the kingdom; to teach, baptise, and nurture new believers; to respond to human need by loving service; to seek to transform unjust structures of society; to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.The second part of the book consists of seven essays under the general title of "Issues in Mission." The majority of these are written by non-Western Christians. Some of the essay titles are: "Migration and Mission: The Religious Significance of the North-South Divide" (Jehu Hanciles); "Reading the Bible in the Non-Western Church: An Asian Dimension" (Moonjang Lee); "Worship is Nothing but Mission: A Reflection on Some Japanese Experiences" (Ken Christoph Miyamoto); and "Discipleship: Marked for Mission" (Tim Dakin).As is true of most collections of essays by multiple authors, these essays differ as to style and depth. However, they are all worth reading, particularly for someone concerned with the advance of the Gospel in a multicultural environment.

Not a good read if this is not your passion... We used 3 texts in my class. This was the third and this was the hardest one to get into or pull from. The contributors to this books were global scholars. Several from Africa, Asia, and So. America and one from Europe. The first half of the book explains the Five Marks of Mission. And I think they were either going for point/counterpoint or they were going for definition of the term/real life example. I'm not sure but for the first ten chapters, two each were dedicated to the each mark. The second part of the book was even more difficult to follow than that.However difficult the book is, if missions is your passion, this may work for you. Otherwise, there are other better books to read.
